Seriously, so many people here are such hard core fans that one has to wonder... is there any way that you can be satisfied with MoO3? Can it possibly live up to your expectations? I mean sh-t... its only a game.
Day after release I'm expecting a 50/50 flame/compliment split.

I imagine I will "like" the game in the sense that I "liked" EU2. I will play it a lot at first, then realize how disappointing it is and stop playing with a bad taste in my mouth. Some of the decisions made by IG just seem so similar to the fundamental flaws in EU2 that I don't think this will become my new favorite game.

I'm surprised to hear that. I'll have to check it out. It can't solve the fundamental problems of the game (the one province rule and the horrible AI), but maybe it tweaked the cavalry blitzing, no allies that aren't adjacent to you, and other minor quirks with the last patch.

I must admit having become somewhat ambivalent until a few days ago when the smattering of AAR's appeared.
The detail and potential depth sparked my interest markedly.

Having skipped MOO1 and MOO2, MOO3 will be a totally new experience. If it's as good or better than SMAC I know I'll be playing it for years to come.
I don't care how bad it is either, I've been waiting too long for it. Too much time invested in waiting.
I'll get it no matter what.

the thread title is one of the dumbest questions i've heard in a while, I won't know if I'll like it until after I start playing the game.

I've played MoO and MoO2 and I have better memories of MoO since I played it in highschool at lunch break when I came home. It was a very addicting game, just like Civilization . I've waited years and by the time MoO 2 came along, I bought it, and having no powerful enough machine to play it, I read the manual over and over for a month, which added to the time of waiting for the release made me expectations for the game enlargen (i dunno if that word exists), anyways, by the time I played the game I was disapointed, and my brothers played it, and when the patch 1.3 came out, balancing out things, the game was allright, not great like the first one.
I fear that MoO3 will follow the same course, I have the 'puter for it, but will I have the enjoyment?
Only time will tell...

yeah, it was a bad title. But most people who responded were capable of reading the first post and understanding the question.

The big problem for me is I don't want to buy the game if I won't like it (sounds sensible I think). But how to know?
I need previews. Dan's doesn't say anything about combat and thus is totally utterly and absolutely useless for me. The AAR's are fine but beta testers were selected from people who wanted the game, and they saw it become better and better as the builds came by. That means at first they may have been disappointed and then the game became better. But there may still be an annoying thing that they managed to forget (forgive?) because the game made lots of progress in other areas. So reading the beta testers comments is very informative, but not enough to provide a good clue to me.
AAR's aren't reviews. They don't tell you if you can trust the tactical AI: you have to dig the info from embellished (and often good and interesting) prose.
So, there is no way now to know if I would like the game. Argh!
I expect a few reviews here will help me make an opinion. Then I can decide whether I would like the game or not and buy it or not.

Not having good previews right now will not effect your decision on whether to purchase. At worst it will delay it.
