Meh, I wouldn't necessarily call the guy the king of dorks, but he's certainly got a ****ed up set of priorities.

The valedictorian in my graduating class was the same way (i.e. she was anal retentive about getting good grades, often at the expense of actually learning anything), and she was more of a preppy than a nerd.

Same at my HS. I think the type of person who do something like this is usually the Little Mr./Ms. Perfect who has everything in the world going for them, and in this case just couldn't take it when things didn't go his way.

Or they're under the illusion that they have to get into Princeton (or Yale or Harvard or whatever) in order to have a worthwhile existence, and they have to be valedictorian (and president of every club in which they're capable of feigning interest) if they want to get into Princeton.

Meanwhile, our nerds were all busy trying to get into MIT, and were operating on the assumption that a 4.0 GPA wouldn't do an ounce of good if the most difficult class they took was Basket Weaving 101. True, many of them were under the illusion that they had to get into MIT, but all the same, they weren't selling themselves short in the process.

I had a friend who went preppy (at which point we drifted apart pretty quickly), and I remember that he got a less-than-perfect score on the PSAT's and blew a gasket, saying things like "Well, I guess I can kiss Harvard goodbye." It was absolutely pitiful.

Quiet! Stop giving out our secrets. MIT is an excellent school though. If not, Caltech, CMU, Stanford and Berkeley are good substitutes.
