Diane Delekta said her son, who filed the suit Friday, fulfilled the district's work program requirements and performed professionally at work. "It was what he would do if he were a paralegal in a law office," she said. "He prepared documents, met with clients." The Memphis school board considered altering its grade policy to allow percentage grades from the countywide district to be factored into its system. The board rejected that option January 29. "I heard ahead of time (that the threat of a lawsuit) was out there, but to worry about that would be wrong," board President Harold Burns said. The suit names the school principal, superintendent and all seven school board members as defendants. It asks to have the grade changed and to have class rankings, due out Monday, blocked until the case is settled. A judge is to consider a restraining order request Monday.

Not necessarily, Boris.

My school does it so the valedictorian is selected by both the students and the teachers. Grades play a factor, but not as much as public speaking skills do.

Weighted grading is messed up. Some classes can earn a 5.0 while others only can get a 4.0. This means that being valedictorian is no longer based on performance but based on what classes you take (or don't). My school's valedictorian purposely took chorus for no credit. It's not that he had a bad voice, far from it. It's that as an unweighted course, an A would have lowered his GPA. Pretty freakin' stupid if you ask me.

The guy doesn't deserve to be tops in his class. Anybody that is that anal about grades should have known not to take a class that would only drag down his point average. The time to deal with those kind of issues is BEFORE, not after. He's the fool... and the lawsuit makes him look like a whiner as well

Well, before lashing out at the kid, I would put my money on it that it was ultimately the parents who are behind the lawsuit. Kids who act this anal about grades tend to be under tremendous pressure from their parents to perform well. I remember a girl at my school who got a 97 on a quiz and literally begged the teacher to let her retake the test and try to get a 100 because her parents would ground her for not getting a perfect score on a test.

I thank god that it exists every day. It is the reason I was able to get into college. If my grades hadn't been weighted to take into account the extra work I did, as opposed to students who took easier classes, I would've gotten a 3.1, not a 3.4, and I would NOT be attending the college I am now.

Oh my ya im only a sophomore in high school now and the deal is if your grades are good enough and you get the recommendation you take the advanced or AP class if you can. Each one adds points to your overall average and it rewards people who take harder classes compared to those who take blow job classes like ceramics instead of Adv Physics.
