I believe it was 158 or something. My capital, with ironworks, factory and hoover dam.

I didn't get the chance to build mfg plant. I won before that.

By the way I had a chance on an Iron Works in my latest game, but it was in a city so far away from my capital that it had far too much corruption....

192, with 2 or 3 gone to corruption.

This was a city right next to my (relocated!) capital, with the Iron Works, Factory, Mfg. Plant, fully railroaded city squares, Hoover Dam, and a Nuclear Plant.

Of course, it was on Chieftan mode.

I think Ferropolis (a city in the Regular Demogame) will surpass these numbers, if all production improvements are built. Its at 102 shields now, with Iron Works, factory and Hydro Plant(we have Hoover's) but its only size 12 and can work more hills and We can build nuclear plant there too I believe.

226, never saw a site like that one before or since, size was a perfect 21 and I had Factory, Iron Works, Manufacturing Plant, Nuclear Plant, and Hoover. Also had 2 Gold hills and a was located on a river, Commerce was something like 130, it was a tremendous site. The city was named Minneapolis IIRC.

i just saw some one with hoover dam and nuclear plant. i thought that having a nuclear plant would make you old plant (water in that case) useless. that's what i thought i said in the manual. do i get an extra bonus for having both??? have been missing something there?

my most was 130 with 2 cattle and 4 or 5 hills and everyting railroad, ironworks, hydroplant, factory but no manufacturing plant and not enough citizens in the city, i might have been able to get more shields otherwise.

138 shields plus 3 lost to corruption. Regent level and the city was right in between my palace and FP. Population just reached 21 with hills, mountains and irrigated plains. All RR'ed with factory and Hoover. No water for nuclear and the game finished before I could build a manufacturing plant

The Hoover Dam brings the *effect* of a Hydro Plant into cities on the same continent. All the other cities can also build a Nuclear Plant for greater benefit.

Emma:

Yes. Nuclear plants are the optimum for production, with the slight risk of a meltdown (very slight). Any city can only have ONE power plant active (the last one built). Hoover places a hydro plant in every city on the continent.

Anyone figure out the theoretical limit?

How about 1 coal on hills, one iron on hills and all the rest cattle on plains? Coal has a base production of three, iron and cattle on plains have a base of two. All other squares have at best a base of one. Since for every coal you need a square that produces less than two, there is no advantage of having more than one coal (needed for Ironworks). So I would propose using:

1 coal on hills (base = 3)
1 iron on hills (base = 2)
18 cattle on plains (base =2)
plus the center square (base =1, plus provides food for iron and coal squares).

The base is 3+2+1+18*2=42.

RR: +21

So city base is 63.

MP: 100%
NP: 100%
IW: 100%

So total is 63*4=252.

I did this from memory. Is this the best? I think that irrigated plains with Uranium can be subsitituted for mined plains with cattle. Both produce 3 shields and two food.

Oops.

How about 499?

Government: Democracy

Mobilized

Palace, all happiness stuff, all corruption stuff, Forbidden Palace 1 square away, factory, manufacturing plant, nuclear plant and Iron Works

Population: 20 (not 21!)

9 cattle squares, mined and RR: 3 food, 5 shields each

10 coal squares, mined and RR: 1 food, 7 shields each

1 iron square, mined and RR: 1 food, 6 shields

Center square is coal, 2 food, 6 shields

Total food: 40

Total base shields: 127

Total additional shields: +300%

Grand total: 508

However, there was some waste, so the actual production read 499. On the F1 screen, it said 496(?).

I tried using 3 flood plains with wheat and all coal except for 1 iron for the IW, and it was not quite as good (490).

So, the next question is:

What exactly is the effect of RR? I guess I could just do a search, but after all this damn work, I feel lazy.

BTW, I did this by trial and error. Someone who remembers number theory and solving simultaneous congruences can do the integer math problem to find the absolute optimum. 1991 was a long time ago.

Suffering from ads?

Not Sure that this is the max but this should come close

21 tiles all rail Roaded

4 Wheat on FP, irrigated 28F 0S
2 Iron on Hills, Mined 2F 10S
2 Coal on Hill, Mined 1F 12S
12 Hills, mined 12F 48S
city 2F 1S
Totals: 45F 71S

With Factory (50%) IW (100%) Nuc Plant (100%) and MP (50%)
you could have a size 22 city producing 284 shields.

Uh, Brizey.

I like you work on the theoretical maximums

However I am more interested in the maximums from a city that could actually exist in a Civ 3 game.

RR simply provide a bonus of 1 Food or Shield to a worked tile (which is why forests are not affected by RR's)

i think i'll make the criteria a bit more well... you know realistic.
so if you have:

7 bonus grassland tiles (mined)
and
6 hills(mined)
with coal and iron and ironworks and factory and hooverdam and nuclear and manufac. plant and all the rest
irrigated
then: you have 166 shields for example in the capital. (not corruption)

(hmmm, thought you would have more. everything grassland btw) anyone know what it is if everything is plains?

Mad Bomber and Emma:

I realize that this is not realistic, but it does give you a measure of just how good a city is. I was just curious. Actually, I forgot golden age.

The attached save is the best I could do.

It is still 499. This must be a hard coded limit, because it should be producing nearly 600!

It is the same as I posted above, just with a golden age as well. The coal tiles are producing 8 base shields!

So if 499 is the hard coded limit, then a city producing over 200 is kicking ass.

Really though, once you can crank out a MA every turn, any more is not all that useful unless you are going for a space race victory. Even then, you are better off with ten good cities instead of one monster city.

MB:

RR does more than that. How could a flood plain get to seven food?

Base food is 3. Irrigation adds 1. RR adds one. Wheat adds one. That makes 6, not 7. But I have seen seven food on a wheat/flood plain.
