	Is Liberal Socialism even possible in the US? Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

it doesn't seem possible that the US could ever become a liberal socialist country such as those in scandinavia. Even the most economically leftist people in the country, union workers, tend to be very socially conservative.

So I guess there's no hope in the US for the leftists

No, it will never work, only because people here won't stand paying exorbinate amounts of taxes. The philosophy is nice and ideal, but it won't work.

Well, there's a common misconception that a more socialist type government would require higher taxes... but in reality, it has to do more with efficient spending and less corporate welfare and useless military spending.

I still have hope for a more socialist system, because I think eventually, people will get sick of authoritative conservatism *cough fascism*.

EDIT: Besides, the only reason the socialistic nations don't spend more then 1% on their military is because they know the US will come to the rescue.

Actually it's quite the opposite. Most Americans are too dumb to want it. About a third of the population supports social democracy, as long as it isn't called that.

Seriously though, considering the position the US lower-classes are in, I am surprised it is taking them so long to get a movement going - probably because the 'democratic' US govt. would called the communist subverters and arrest em :roll:

No it is because the lower classes are conservative. even if they are in favour of economic socialism (which i doubt), they would be turned off from the social liberalism of socialism... those who favour higher wages, etc. tend to also favour school prayer and be pro-life.

Marxist ideas in America have almost always been more populist than socialist

notice how the movements in america favouring business regulation, etc. (the populist and lesserly the progressive movements) also favoured alcohol prohibition, etc. William Jennings Bryant was also the prosecution in the Scopes Monkey trial. The left in America is very conservative
