The USA paid for WW1 not to result in a German led european superpower. The USA paid for WW11 not to result in a German led superpower. The USA paid for the Cold War not to result in a Russian led superpower.

The USA has paid for Israel to distract arab countries from doing anything the American government doesn't like in the ME.

The USA is now paying Turkey to allow the USA to pursue foreign policy (war) on Iraq.

Actually, for what we got we don't have that much debt either. US balance of accounts have been remarkably stable, despite the occassional hike and dip.
