Depends from what you prefer: if you like city life (and nighlife) Berlin is the first choice in Germany. If youīre going for relaxing, it is probably not the best place...

Heidelberg is very beautiful and Koln is ugly and smelly.

Berlin is one of my least favourite german cities, pompous, brusque Prussian architecture set out in a way that was very disjointed even before the Wall and is now total disharmonic chaos.

Go to Prague- it's the most beautiful city I've ever been in.

copenhagen.... heaaaven

everything so peaceful so sirene, nice little bycicles riding along in the neat little bycicle roads...

quiality of life in the extreme (well, compared to other places )

you could also see the beheaded mermaid

nice place.
prague is better.

Paris is 2nd best ... I still love Prague the most.

Also, although I said Koln is ugly and smelly, it does have a pretty big gay scene so it might appeal to Boris. I went to some gay bars there and had a good night out (don't ask ... ).

Historical sites to visit.
Cultural locations (museums/opera/symphonies)
Beautiful/interesting terrain/architecture
Good nightlife (clubs)
Friendly, helpful people.

Food is also an issue. As a mostly-vegetarian, I may have problems in Germany, I think...

I wouldn't worry about that too much. The Praguers who I met didn't take it as an affront to speak English, unlike in southern Germany (where it wasn't too bad, but still you could tell they didn't like it).

Most of these things you can easily find in Berlin. Also the food-thing shouldnīt be a big problem. The center of the city has enough restaurants, many of them offer at least vegetarian alternatives.

Cultural places: no problem, State Opera, lots of museums etc, etc. same goes for nightlife

Architecture: well, yes as Buck said, the old things are mainly Prussian, but I wouldnīt say it is all ugly (at least newer building here are more ugly IMO). You could also make a short trip from Berlin to Potsdam (ca. 20-30 min. by car) and visit Sanssouci, a typical Rokoko palace. But Berlin itself, due to the big destructions in WWII, is not as nice as other european cities.

People: that differs a lot, the classical cliche for people in Berlin is "at first unfriendly, but they have a very friendly core", means when you only meet people on the street they appear often very unfriendly at the beginning. However, that is not generally true, and esp. not for younger people.

PLEASE don't choose Prague, I've been there 3 times with 4 different friends and they've been robbed by young kids in the street markets at least once

I place my bucks inside my shoes when abroad so who cares about peasants

If, again, you don't mind coming to see "la famiglia" I'd suggest:

you really donīt have to be afraid coming to germany, boris. we only eat west coast guys.

seriously, i should be worried about a thread like this. I didnīt even take one year for people becoming afraid travelling to germany. on the other side I will postpone my plan travelling to the US. actually I wanted to go there this year. but now I am afraid about getting arrested immediately at the airport.

I think the same should be said here, then. I don't think a German tourist would encounter any problems in the U.S., at least certainly not in New York City or other major cities.
