	German friends: Safe for Americans in Berlin? Inflate your Upload Space

Hello meine deutschen Freunde!

I am seriously considering a long weekend trip to Berlin at the end of March, thanks to a really good deal on travel I have found. My question is, do you think as an American it will be too risky to come to Germany? What is the level of Anti-American sentiment, and has there been any word of American tourists being treated poorly?

Keep in mind my German speaking skills aren't very good, so I will be an obvious American. I thought about masquerading as Canadian, but think it would be hard to keep that up for long.

Well, what do you think?

I didn't think about it at first, but family and friends started saying such things. So I figured I would ask an honest question and see what it was like.

I don't think I'd be that much of a target in Europe, especially since if anyone bothered to confront me about American policies, I'd probably agree with them.

Not in my, albeit limited, experience. It's a fascinating place to be if you are at all interested in 20th century history.
True .. I wouldn't want to live there since too much of it is still either a construction site or a series of soul-destoying tower blocks... but that's not what Boris asked.

My roommate was in Berlin about 5 years ago, and he thought it was a beautiful city and that the people were extremely nice.

I could also do Munich, but was thinking that would be better in the Fall, for obvious reasons.

I'm also toying with Rome or Prague, though I don't know if I can get prices as good there.

I had thought about Greece, but then thought that if everyone there is like pattycakes, I should avoid it like the plague.

Amsterdamn people are friendly... a bit too friendly

The city with the 3rd highest Greek population is Melbourne.

Yeah, a friend of mine spent a month in Prague last year and loved it.

Germans: Is there any place you would recommend travelling to instead of Berlin? I admit I'm not too familiar with popular tourist destinations in Germany.

I can recommend Prague VERY highly - the cost of accomodation/eating/drinking etc. should be much lower there than in Berlin.

Munich is extremely extremely expensive in the Fall ... for obvious reasons . Hell, it expensive any time of year.
If you're gonna fly thousands of miles to get to Europe there are many better places to go IMHO, although I did enjoy my time in Munich (but it's cheaper for me to get there ).

Donīt worry. Even if a big part of the people disagrees with your government, most people wonīt do anything against you because youīre from America. There isnīt a lynch mentality here against Americans. Except some extremist idiots which exist in every country, most people here can behave civilized....

You can expect probably some hot debates over the current political situation, but thatīs all. Of course, there are certain areas of Berlin where it is generally not the best idea to show up as tourist, but thatīs the case in every big western city (probably in every city).
