French and German music Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Does anybody know of any good French or German bands? It seems like mostly Europe produces club music and stuff, but I was wondering if anybody knew of any good indie rock or anything similar that comes out of Europe. Anything would be good, just so long as it doesn't suck, I'm just requesting French and German because I've studied those a bit and might have slightly more of a clue as to what is being sung.

Well, my knowledge stops at around the mid-70s, but Francoise Hardy's 60s recordings are quite lovely. In a similar vein, but rather less good, are France Gall, Atoine and Hugues Aufrey.

Someone else will doubtless mention Kraftwerk, Can and Faust, so I won't bother.

Buggered if I know what either country has done recently...

Put an end to popups!

Yeah, you'd think with all the Europeans around they could drop the names of a couple bands.

I'm just trying to find some decent music that's not in English. It can't be that hard.

And of course Serge Gainsbourg, Jaques Brel (well, Belgian, but French language), and Charles Aznavour for fans of the grizzled.

And Bridget Bardot might not be much of a singer, but she sounds damn sexy nonetheless.

Bugger - I misspelled Antoine as Atoine, so you won't find anything in Kazaa. It's not that good anyway.

You may find Edith Piaf a little dated, but she was a true great also.

April March are sort of 60's French music revivalists. Which is good if, like me, you think there wasn't enough of it the first time around. They are, however, from Toronto and sing mostly in English. But, due to the somewhat unspecific nature of Kazaa downloads, I did labour for a long time under the illusion that they were a single 60's chanteuse in the Bridget Bardot mould, so I count them as French.

an illustration of the dangers of recommending music you only know from Kazaa, and of passing off superficial googling as actual knowledge

April March is a solo French singer, but from the 90's/now not the 60's. There is a Canadian band called An April March who are the first thing who come up when you google, but are otherwise irrelevant.

Noir Désir is probably the most popular French rock band currently active. I'd recommend 'Tostaky' as their best LP.

For French rock try SAEZ and Noir Desir. Both excellent.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

French Rock :
- Matmatah
- Sinsemilia
- Noir Désir
- Mano Negra

There are also good French bands who are not playing rock, like :
- Paris Combo
- Saint Germain (electro jazz, no words)

If you're more into the 80's, I'd recommand :
- Téléphone
- Indochine

I know nearly nil. in German music, but I enjoy listending to Freundeskreis (Hip-hop), or Seeed (ragga, yes there are 3 "e"). I also enjoy Rammstein very much

When you listen to Rammstein, you wonder: why doesn't all heavy metal bands sing in German? Heave metal in German really makes sense...
