Nuclear Survival Gear? Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Don't just laugh at me, I'm actually seriously considering the possiblity of this happening.

I need to know what I need to get in order to survive, this will be helpful mostly to Americans, but I appreciate anyone's expertise.

Assuming that I'm not killed by the blast or the firestorm, what steps do I need to take to protect against the fallout.

Supplies I have on hand now:

Flashlight
Nuclear Radiation Detection Kit
Gas Mask (US Military Grade)
Extra Filter
Chemical Weapon Detection Kit
Military Combat Knife
Duct Tape

I'm assuming that the radiation will seep into the ground water, so how much water should I set aside? Food? I used to think that people preparing for such things were such blasted idiots and freaks, but I'm not so sure anymore especially with this world right now......

The gas mask is supposed to filter out radioactive molecules in the air... but I don't have a lead suit, and any attempts to acquire them might land me on "suspected terrorist" list..... Does anyone know where I get something comperable?

What food stores the best and has most resistence to radiation?

As for my detection kits, I can tell how bad things are, of course I guess if my skin was peeling away it would have the same effect....

Please Help Apolytoner in Fear. I'm very stressed sitting around moping about the end isn't going to make me feel better... at least if I try to prepare for it....

Enter the AD-FREE zone

There was a very good article posted on Apolyton the other day about this. Basically, your skin and any clothing, and the cans on canned food, will block alpha and beta particles. Gamma rays are another thing but not much you can do about those. To avoid fallout, leave the area.

Duct tape shouldn't be a part of a nuclear survival gear pack. It's an essential part of everyday life - you should always have duct tape.

Put an end to popups!

what good is a gas mask?

There is something very important americans don't realize about gas masks.

I shouldn't need to point this out. You'll have to figure out by yourselves why you will not have advance warning to put these on- and thusly they will be largely innefective unless you carry it with you at all times. Even then contaminants could get inside the mask.

I'd at least add radio to that so I could get updates from radio. Also shotgun, since there could be lots of looting going on if you're not in the near impact zone, depends where the impact is happening and where you live.
Also some kind of basic medikit, if you get wounded or something. Vitamins, lots of them, if you have to stay down under for longer time, you could need those to feel better.. lots of water.. clear water could be an issue..
I don't know what the hell can you do with duct tape, but it can always come handy. Lots of porn mags to read, it can take a while when you can get out so.. good to have something to read and do.

I'd really think about how much filters I'd need. Gas mask with one filter.. how long it goes? 24h? It would really suck to have all this nice equipment and then forget to have enough filters. And like someone pointed out, there's pretty much nothing you can do to gamma rays, except leave the area. So to put in in short, get a gun, medikit, make sure you have enough filters, and think about how much water you need and then double it.

It's called lead. It protects from gamma rays.

If not then the years I spent operating a nuclear reactor would have killed me

I forgot to mention netrons. These must be stopped as well. Water is an effective shielding to use for neutrons. So I propose you construct water tanks on 5 sides of your house (the sixth being the floor of course). Inside of the water shielding you need lead. We also used steel in the navy. In fact you should encase the lead shielding in steel to protect the lead and prevent lead contamination. Alpha and Beta radiation/contamination is not as much of a concern excpet for dust. Your air filtration system outlined below will protect against this.

Next up ditch the gas masks and consruct your own ventilation system with HEPA filters. These should only circulate inside air and not bring in outside air. Next is an airtight house. I suggest stainless steel. We had decontamination rooms in the navy that were made of stainless and regular carbons steel. We had watertight doors also to seal it. You need these for your house.

Next up is water. I suggest digging a storage tank underneath your house and storing 1 million gallons of water. Next up is food. You will have to stockpile your food.

And lastly we will discuss waste. Along with your storage tank you will have to leave room for your own sanitation system. Do not use the city system. The important thing to remember is plumbing vents. You cannot have these vented. Install multiple check valves to prevent air backflow. These valves would have to be airtight though. Perhaps you could have the valves spring loaded. This would require that you flush the waste with appropiate pressure. Although my suggestion is not to vent anything except your tank. Do not drain your sinks etc. This water should be reused. Thusly only your toilet would be connected to the undergound tank. There would be no vents except for the underground tank.

I forgot to mention your water supples. Obviously you will need a pump to pump this water into your home. The storage tank should be unvented. But pumping from this tank would create a vacuum. Thusly a system would have to be used to bring in air from a compressed air cylinder or something to keep the tank from collapsing from a vacuum.

And to top it off you must live in this house all the time. Only leaving during safe hours where attacks are not expected to keep your supplies topped off. Never fall below 75% capacity.

Perhaps the easiest answer is to get yourself elected President - then the US taxpayer pays for all the nuclear fallout protection you could possibly need.

In the finnish military they taught us all of this. All you need is the raincloak (some use the term 'magic-cloak') used in finnish forces. It blocks all chemical and radioactive harm.

I've recently seen a short documentary about American "duck and Cover" information campaign. There was an ad where you saw an elementary school class. Then suddenly you see bright light coming through the window and all those ABC-knights went down on the floor and a calm deep male voice said: "When you see a nuclear explosion just duck and cover." Absolutely hilarious!

Yes, I'm laughing at you.

Watch the latest episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit if you have Showtime. It points the stupidity of being an end-of-the-world obsessive. It also shows what a racket the "survivalist" industry is, preying on peoples' fears.

The bottom line is that, in the event of a nuclear holocaust, there isn't going to be much you can do to change your fate. So you'd best stop worrying over it and enjoy the here and now. Otherwise you'll just make your current existence unfun.
