	Why are people so closed? Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Why are people so closed to the idea of alien life? Though much of the population believes its "out there", go out and ask people about it and they'll look at you like your some crazy man (or a democrat. )

So why is it so hard to accept there may be alien life? Why is it even harder to accept that it may have visited us? Why is it socially unacceptable to even suggest that they exist?

It's not hard to accept the concept of alien life. However, the odds against them ever have visited us are astronomical.

Yes, I'll admit that, HOWEVER......I'm talking about why people give you a really odd look if you even bring it up. Why?!

I believe that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

I just do not believe that any non-human, intelligent life has made any contact with Earth in the past, or the present.

Well, in all honesty, it depends upon how you bring it up.

"I read some statistic that 47% (or whatever) of Americans think that aliens have visited Earth over the last 50 years. What do you/y'all think?" probably is the basis for a good, but possibly short, conversation in which you will be exposed to a variety of different viewpoints.

"I was reading in Alien Hunter magazine that 3 lights were videotaped above Lubbock Texas back in the 50's, which proves conclusively that WE ARE NOT ALONE" (with the "we are not alone" bit spoken as if it is in all caps) will likely get you some looks from the dissenters, but other people who are more ready to believe will probably chime in.

"Damn, my ass is SORE because of that alien anal probe. I just wish they'd STOP IT!" will definitely get you those looks you were describing from ALL co-workers, regardless of their opinions on the subject.

Slowwhand is undoubtably referring to Project Blue Book, where the Air Force made an attempt to document possible UFO landings with, believe it or not, a (mostly) honest attempt to ascertian their veracity.

The study lasted for appx. 22 years, when it was closed down in 1969 with the following conclusions:

"No UFO reported, investigated and evaluated by the Air Force was ever an indication of threat to our national security;

There was no evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force that sightings categorized as "unidentified" represented technological developments or principles beyond the range of modern scientific knowledge; and

There was no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as "unidentified" were extraterrestrial vehicles. "

Why?

Because the idea of alien life that visited us covertly is solipsistic and irrelevant. If it does not matter one way or the other, we have to assume that the most elegant case (no visitation) is right.
