Lombardi: Planning the NCAA pool Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Gentlemen: We'll be able to make some changes this year to the structure of the NCAA tournament pool since I've finally found a freeware program worthy enough to try out. The beautiful thing about it is that it automatically creates website files for it - I just have to upload them. Click here to see for yourselves...

Anyway, the things we need to come to an agreement on are these...

-- Points scoring system
-- Bonus or no bonus

My initial thoughts were these:

I've come up with a points scoring system based on a perfect score of 300 (essentially, if you pick all 64 games correctly, you'd score 300 points without a bonus). This is how it'd break down:

First-round (including play-in game): 2 points
Second-round: 4 points
Sweet 16: 9 points
Elite 8: 12 points
Final 4: 15 points
Championship: 20 points

I do also want to include a bonus, but I'm not sure what to do. (Incidentally, does anyone know what the hell the "Fischietto bonus" is?)

Please discuss...

Ah! MARCH MADNESS!!! I oppose a bonus since this isn't like the NFL where %15-20 of the teams have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl. I figure there are like 3 or 4 teams out of 64 to choose from to win it all. But if you decide on a bonus, make it small.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I have to disagree with Berzerker, there are several teams which could win this year. Everyone's preseason favorite, Arizona has dropped games it should have won. I think that 1-8 has a legitimate shot at winning this year.

I want to repeat this year

Count me in... but I have to say I agree that a bonus isn't needed. But for totally different reasons.

IMHO, giving 20 points for the championship is bonus enough. I don't see the need to give an additional bonus on top of that. If you want to do that, might as well make the final game worth 100 points and make the rest of your picks meaningless

I agree, 20 points is bonus enough. Let's make the first round picks mean something.

He was suggesting a bonus for picking the Champion before the tournament starts.

However, that's exactly what we do when we fill out the brackets in advance, so it seems kind of redundant.

You can always make the last game worth more points...

We're picking the whole bracket in advance, not this round-by-round nonsense, where you can make any old off the wall pick and be right back in it the next day, right????

Correct, pick the whole tournament before it starts.
(at least that's the way it has worked in the past)

I don't want the bonus to be so high that if you don't pick the eventual winner you have no chance. The rest of the pool shouldn't be relegated to tie breaker for all the people that picked one team to win.

The main problem I have is the disparity in points awarded for each round, you can kick butt in the first 2 rounds and still lose if you are average over the remaining rounds and lose the championship. On the other hand, people shouldn't get a bunch of points for picking 1 and 2 seeds over 15 and 16 seeds, lol. Oh well, maybe the point disparity isn't so bad.

Berzerker: Here are the point possibilities based on rounds:

Round 1 (66 points)
Round 2 (64 points)
Sweet 16 (72 points)
Elite 8 (48 points)
Final 4 (30 points)
Championship (20 points)

I don't see much of a disparity...

The disparity I'm talking about is getting one game of the final 4 correctly worth more than getting 7 first round games correctly. Actually, that system really isn't too different than the one I was thinking of ironically, I was thinking 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 which equals 66, 64, 48, 32, 20, and 12. But as you know, I'm flexible.

Berzerker: I just wanted the scoring to be based on a round number. Plus, this puts greater emphasis on the middle rounds, especially on the Sweet 16 round (which, in every - and I mean *every* - pool I've either run or played in, has been the round that's separated the men from the boys, IYKWIM).

Are there any other objections to this scoring system (2, 4, 9, 12, 15, 20; no bonuses)?

H Tower: Just remember that you still have to defend it (like Adam Smith managed to do) and that your title is still tainted by the cardinal bracketing sin you committed in picking all four #1 seeds into the last two rounds...

It helped me win didn't it?

If I had chosen differently I quite probably would have lost.

Ming: I think 4-6-9 would put too much emphasis on the first two rounds. As it stands, the maximum possibles for the first two sets of two rounds are 130 and 120. What you're suggesting would make it 228 and 120. I think that's too much weight. Just my opinion, though. Let's see what everyone else's is...

Compare these two systems, guys:

2-4-9-12-15-20
4-6-9-12-16-20

Which looks better to you?

How about 3-6-9? The disparity you cite is because of more games.
