Ahh, you said fast. Sorry.

Fast to me is a relative term. Fast is more towards best than slow is.

Cheap and fast is a recipe for a nightmare computer with no way out. Just my experience.

I need something faster than my 700 MHz I got. And preferably with a Geforce 1 or 2. But thats not required.

SOMETHING THAT CAN MAYBE ACTUALLY RUN MODERN GAMES?

Also, just for a bonus, how do I find out what type or RAM I have and if I can install more?

Hey hey! Datajack needs a computer as well.. he's disgusted after attempting to play Simcity 4 on his rotten machine and needs a new one, although the difference with new systems doesn't seem to be THAT big- currently own a PIII-700/128MB

This is not the fastest, but it's rather cheap and should have enough performance for the time being:

*Athlon ~2400+ (at the point where the price increases faster than the performance)
*nForce2 motherboard - no need for sound card or network card
*Radeon 9700 Pro or GeForce Ti 4200
*DDR 333 memory - 2x256 or 2x512 (i heard the nForce2 uses the memory more efficient if you have two memory sticks)

Hey I still have my 700 and I can run modern games. Well I don't play modern action games.

But I can run Max Payne, Neverwinter Nights, Morrwind etc. just fine.

But I think I will upgrade my 700 this summer.

We just got a Fry's in town just a few weeks ago. Unbelivable size!! I could spend hours in that store. . It's a geek's paradise. I never have seen a elctronics store that big.

My friend at work doesn't recommend them for some reason. He says the customer service is terrible.

But the cashier service was great. At best buy they never have enough cashiers.

Fry's prices seemed pretty good, but not super good. Although I picked up Icewind Dale II for $34.99 and they gave me a $10 rebate with the game. The digital camera prices looked the same as Best buy. I didn't compare mobo/ cpu prices.

its also 1/3 of the system cost that he specified. thats crazy. sure a graphics card is important but theres no point if its all being bottlenecked at the CPU

The CPU is the bottleneck? Well, sure, if you prefer to play Quake at 350 frames/sec instead of 300

But seriously, when I play games I always turn up the resolution and image quality until the graphics card begs for mercy. Then I turn it down until the game is playable again. That way, the graphics card is always the bottleneck for me.

I understand most people don't mind playing at a lower resolution and less detail and for them the GeForce Ti4200 (or Radeon 9500?) is obviously a much better choise if you want to save some bucks.

the Fry's in my city has no theme that I know of. It's just a big ass wherehouse looking store. It also have a coffee shop in it for some reason.

You want a cheap box, you need to build it yourself. Check prices at www.pricewatch.com, at least for comparison.
