The latest support number for the NDP, according to Ekos. Highest it's been for a decade. The NDP is now the second-strongest party in the country.

In other news, the CA languishes at fourth place in the 10% range, as it has for the last couple of months. The CA leadership continues to stick its head in the sand and claim that these numbers are at odds with internal polling.

Finally, Canadian opposition to a US-led non UN-sanctioned war with Iraq has reached its highest level yet at 74%. Our glorious Prime Minister seems to have sensed this move in the making and managed to get in his 2 cents:

quote:
"Canada has clearly stated at the beginning of this crisis this summer, and I repeated that to (U.S.) President (George) Bush, that we Canadians are going to war only, only under the umbrella of the United Nations so there's been no confusion"

which is the most coherent statement on the Canadian position yet.

"which is the most coherent statement on the Canadian position yet."

But the quote says Canada clearly stated that at the beginning of the crisis.

He's been mush-mouthed about it since things started cooking. It's been difficult to get a straight answer.

More difficult than usual, that is.

What he should have said is: "We will not go to war because all 1000 of our troops are now in Afghanistan, because instead of funding a military we've given billions of dollars to the Natives again in our new budget and we need to fund a new park in Shawinigan".

We have 70 000 troops. It's just that our Democracy causes great unhappiness when any significant number are actually deployed...

I thought we had 70,000 people employed by the Ministry of Defence, which certainly doesn't translate to 70,000 troops...

The 70 000 is only military, though. Doesn't include civilians, IIRC...

Actually, what he should have said is that given the American predilection for haphazard bombing we've decided to keep our forces as far away from theirs as possible.

Given the fact that Frogger seems to like them, I assume that if the NDP ever gained control over the Federal government the entire Western half of the country would die of shock. Is that a good assumption?

Not the entire west.

Saskatchewan and BC have or have recently had NDP provincial governments. There's just that pesky little province between them that'd implode before electing an NDP government.

I think the NDP set a provincial record for "seats lost during one election" in the latest BC provincial elections, and Saskatchewan is facing record numbers of people emigrating to Alberta...

Edit: Interesting numbers: http://www12.statcan.ca/english/cen...n/mob/provs.cfm
quote:
Only three provinces - Prince Edward Island, Ontario and Alberta - gained more population than they lost through interprovincial migration between 1996 and 2001. The remainder, including the three territories, lost more people than they gained.

Although these three provinces posted positive net migration, Alberta's gains stand out. Alberta had a net gain of 119,400, far above the equivalent of only 3,600 between 1991 and 1996. Alberta's net gain through internal migration represented 4.7% of its population. In contrast, Ontario's net gain of 51 900 represented only 0.5% of its population, while Prince Edward Island's net gain of 135 accounted for 0.1% of its population.

On the other hand, there was a marked reversal in British Columbia's situation. Between 1996 and 2001, British Columbia lost 23,600 more people than it gained. During the previous five-year period, it had a record net inflow of 150,000 people.
...
Saskatchewan's net loss of about 24,900 in migratory exchanges with the rest of the country represented 2.7% of its population aged five years and over, the second strongest rate among the provinces. Roughly 67,500 people moved out of the province between 1996 and 2001, while 42,600 moved in.

This continues the trend observed during the previous five-year period when Saskatchewan lost almost 19,800 more people than it gained from migration. More than one-half of the people who left Saskatchewan went next door to Alberta.

I'm liking the 'oversea troops causing trouble on account of us running Dem' line.

Layton is claiming that the popularity of his party is due to their stand against the Iraq war. That might be partly true. But every party seems to get a bit of a bounce after electing a new leader.

The western provinces in shock if NDP formed gov't? Probably the whole country. But here is a far scarier and even more remote scenario: Martin is so far in front that nobody else enters the Lib leadership race. Then just before the vote he drops dead from a heart attack leaving Sheila Copps as the new PM.
