SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) --In what is believed to be the largest-ever marijuana bust along America's southwestern border, U.S. Customs Service officers have seized nearly 20,000 pounds of marijuana from a tractor-trailer, officials said Saturday.
"This is a huge seizure," said Michael Turner, special agent in charge of the U.S. Customs office of investigations in San Diego. "Any time we can prevent 10 tons of narcotics from entering the streets of America, it's a great day for the U.S. Customs Service."
Friday afternoon, the truck was crossing into California from Mexico with a load of computer circuit boards. At a scheduled inspection at the U.S. entry port of Otay Mesa, California, just south of San Diego, a drug-sniffing dog summoned officials to the back of the rig, customs officials said.
"When the 30-foot trailer was opened, inspectors found numerous boxes containing packages with a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for marijuana," officials said.
In all, officials seized more than 4,000 packages weighing nearly 20,000 pounds. Customs agents estimated the marijuana's value at more than $9 million.
Customs agents arrested the truck driver, Carlos Ibarra, 39, of Tijuana, Mexico.
The seizure tops previous marijuana busts in the Southwest. In April 2001, customs officers intercepted more than 15,000 pounds of the drug at Otay Mesa. Earlier this month, officers found 12,600 pounds of marijuana at the El Paso, Texas, border station.

Good Job! I'm so glad our Customs agents are worrying about marijuana when there are real criminals and terrorists out there trying to smuggle in WoMD to the US. I saw on "Round Table" this morning that only about 1% of cargo containers that enter the US are inspected. It reminds me of what Oppenheimer said in 1946 when asked if someone could smuggle in a nuclear weapon and detonate it in New York:
"Of course! The first person to try will succeed"
So while our tax dollars are being wasted on tax cuts to the rich and our homeland security dollars are being spent on busting marijuana smugglers (a substance that should be legal anyways), some terrorist somewhere is trying to acquire a WoMD.

This is a good thing, but nothing severe. Sava - why do you think there was any resource of authority wasted into this bust? Should the borders simply stop the minimal searches they already have? Is it the criminal processing time of this case that is the waste? (in which case we just let them go, with the pot as well if we're feeling good?)
What exactly are you saying should have been done here, because I'm a little off as to why a few hours time of 3 canine units and an overweight texan with a flashlight are seen as such a gravely misused resource?
Cynically enough, even as the largest pot bust in that border's history - it'll do next to nothing alone in the war on drugs (there are 17 year old runners casually carrying pounds of it around in stuffed backpacks in this country for effs sake)
Fields of it grow south, that was just a small crop. The only one who got f*cked was the poor driver, and a handfull of greasy gang leaders.
Shame if all you can come up with is "LEGALIZE IT, D00D"

Wow, that sounds Utopian. Maybe we can sell meth in banks as well, just to ease the complications of robbing to feed an addiction that can't physically stop growing before death!

Sure, we all know drugs are bad... look at Zylka...
But it isn't the governments' place to preach this morality. There is one inherent problem in drug use... addiction. Prohibition simply turns addicts into criminals. By legalizing, you can seperate the thugs from the druggies and help with anti-addiction and rehab programs that could be funded from taxing legal marijuana sales. If you could buy pot at a grocery store or gas station, you wouldn't need to buy it from gang-bangers or drug cartels. I think the goal of law enforcement would be to bankrupt criminals if you can't catch them. And since demand for drugs hasn't gone away, it's only intelligent to legalize. |
Here we have one of the biggest problems on side with the "legalize drugs" campaign. On one hand there is myself, who is coping with a (minor enough) cocaine addiction and educated on the ill-effects of any drug you can come up with, on the other - some virgin flake spouting the wonders of free choice because he finally managed to take a hit on someone's joint just before graduating high school. You know just as little of the processes involved in the world of recreational drug use as you do general politics - Does your Grandpa teach you all of your values regarding this, as well?

BUYING POT FROM GANG BANGERS AND DRUG CARTELS??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You really don't have too much a clue into the reality of ANYTHING, do you?
Excuse me, Hobbes, Felch and myself are going to smoke a bowl with "GANG BANGERS AND DRUG CARTELS" right now. Glad to have your educated opinion - Get out and live before you post again, ok?
