Are there people still playing Imperialism II?
Although an old game it has the right balance between depth and high level control.

I never played Imperialism 1 but Imp II is still one of the best strategy games i ever have played.
According some reviews it is much better than Imp 1.

I'm playing it!
I almost quit the game I was playing yesterday. I had only two iron deposits in my home country--an obvious stranglehold on early development. Plus, I was out of money and all the other countries were getting ahead of me in New World conquests.
But then I woke up in the wee hours, couldn't get back to sleep, so I fired up the game again. I started selling lumber and buying iron, and that kept me alive. Then one of my explorers found a silver deposit, so I scraped up enough money to send my army to conquer to province. Next, my explorers wandered into the hills of that province and found iron! Lots of iron!!
My scientists have just discovered Lancers, so I'm going to build a couple of them, and then start building ships to bring back all my New World goodies.
World conquest, here I come!

Could some of the more experienced players share their strategy secrets? |
Don't play any country without a least one horse ranch. You'll need them for cavalry and light artillery.
In the beginning, you need iron, wood, grain and cattle and soon after that, sheep for making cloth. Send all three of your ships out exploring. Dont' worry about invasions because no one can invade you early. All your provinces have forts which can't be stormed until the invention of horse artillery.
Kick the snot out of the Injuns. Yes, I know you can also carry on diplomacy with them, but that's usually a waste of time, effort and money. Just conquer them.
Don't be the weakest military power. That invites war.
Avoid alliances early; they just suck you into pointless wars. You can't yet conquer any forts, but the enemy can cut your sea routes and starve you for commodities.
In the early-to-mid game, build ports on a least two seas in each of your land masses and connect them with roads. That way, if one of your ports is blockaded during a war, your goods can be shipped through the other.
Try to keep extra food around. It never rots, and you can use it if you're blockaded or--better yet--if a major power declares war on a minor power, and the minor power asks you (as its ally) to please absorb it into your country. When its army is added to yours, you suddenly have a lot more mouths to feed.
War with Europeans is usually not the answer. Wars tie you and your opponent down and chew up your resources, while the other nations go on developing, building, inventing and leaving you in the dust.

I loved the first one, but it had a bug (or weird AI) that if you passed a certain threshold of power, every nation immediately declared war on you, unless they were allied without in which case they told you to take your alliance and shove it. How was #2
