Ya thanks. We know already.
Please stop trying to desperately defend the game. We know you like it. We know you don't like Tom Chick's review of it.
Your not that important, get over it.

Well I for one appreciate these tidbits Jonah. Anything I can learn now is something i won't have to learn 3 days from now.

I think this is good news too. For me there were 3 really fun parts of MOO2. Trading (even with its problems), designing ships, and espionage.
The reviews seem to indicate that trading is better and espionage is even more effective so this was good news to me. However, no one seems to have really liked ship design. I was thinking, well 2/3 ain't bad (unintentional Meatloaf quote).
Hopefully now, the fun of ship design has been replaced by the fun of task force design.

I actually prefered designing the ships to the fights myself. Maybe I am weird.
(However I realize the irony that if I knew I would never use the ships in combat then designing them would be pointless so don't bother pointing that out.)

No. There is a certain amount of rock/paper/scissors in the game. In certain circumstances, if you have, say, a large fleet with only particle beams, you'll be defeated by a smaller fleet if they have a huge amount of Shield defense. You need mass drivers (which ignore Shield) and other sorts of weapons.
Plus, you need a variety of Long Range Attack ships (to soften up defenses), Short Range Attack ships (which can protect the Long Rang and come in close to ships to damage them), Point Defense, Indirect Fire (missile ships), and so forth.
I love the tiny Interceptors, by the way. It's fun to see little tiny ships harrassing the enemy.
