	I've had a fantastic idea and would like advice on what to do with it. Full PM-box? Change here!

OK, here is the thing. I have had this marvellous idea, simple yet effective that would make the lives of many much, much easier, and a potentially lucrative one, and I am wondering where I can proceed with it from this point. Does anyone know how to deal with an invention, getting it from a basic idea to a workable concept and then milking it for all it is worth?

I am not going to tell you what it is, but let us say for the sake of argument that it is edible toilet roll. How would I go about taking this vague concept for edible toilet roll and investigating it's feasibility? How would I make a working prototype of it and how would I get people to pay me huge amounts of dosh for the concept?

Without knowing what it is, we'd have no way of knowing how feasible it would be for you to get a working model of it nor to whom you should go for such a thing.

In any case, if it is an euressitechnia (yeah right in english forget it) the most common and easy procedure (and relateively safe) is to have it recorded in the national library.

the first step to acquire a patent on it.

you can call public services in england and ask them about what to do, could probably differ from country to country.

There are companies here that will provide all the expertise that you need and I'd guess they also exist in the UK. Since you've only got an idea you're not likely to get much for it. If its something you could build a prototype of and patent then you should do that first. Once thats done you run around trying to flog it to companies who make similar items or you can try to raise the cash via the bank, your family, and or shareholders and manufacture it yourself.

In all seriousness, it really does depend upon the idea/product, PH.

So, let's ask a few questions that will possibly help us help you:

1. Is your idea for a service or a product?
2. Is your product or service aimed at a specific market (men, preteen children, menstruating women, whatever)?
3. Is your product designed to fulfill an existing need, or create a need as yet unknown?

I'll think of others... I've got an interview to go to.

File a patent once you have everything figured out, the design, etc.

Chances are if you've thought of it, someone else has done so already.

If no one else has a patent, that's a bonus!


I don't know if it's different in the US from the UK regarding patent restrictions, or filing regulations.

It's best to file a patent as soon as possible- look at some inventions where two people develop the same idea simultaneously, where one person gets the credit because they filed first.

I think you are looking at patents - you can either patent a device or a process. First thing you need to do is to find out what requirements there are for a patent. For a device, you probably need a prototype. For a process, you probably need to have a good decription of how it works.

The requirements are different country to country, but I strongly advice you to get one in the US. Their patent office is run by silly doofuses who actually allow people to patent perpetual motion machines (with slightly different wordings).

Anyway, then you need to find if somebody else has already beat you to it, so you probably need to retain the services of a patent lawyer at that point. Now, what you may be able to do is to draft up a nice business plan to lure some venture capitalist to fund you the whole thing. Then you get to play with other people's money, which is always fun.
