Pardon my asking, but has it suddenly become ok not to hire because one isn't gay? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

AHAHAHAHA

So I've been droping off resume's and talking to friends in finding a second goof around kind of job - and something rather ironic stuck out for three of the attempts so far.

-I was point blank told by my hairdresser that I would NOT be hired for any position simply because I'm not gay, despite the fact that the girls, flamers and I always have a fun time together in there
-I was point blank told by a dj friend who works at the bar that they would NOT hire me for any position (even beer server) simply because I was not gay. This is probably a good thing because I'd be roofied in about 10 minutes, judging from all the sordid man-hand ass grabs that come my way in gay friendly environments
-That's all I can remember

You know, I don't think it's a bad thing though, honestly. I guess if they have certain cultural priorities to be filled in these "positions", then so be it. It just seems a dangerous precedent for all businesses to go back to discriminatory hiring practises legally

Got spare money?

Nah, there's something else wrong with your resumes/you... they just broke it down more gently .

For example: 'you are over qualified', like there really is some logic in that?

'we just gave the job', means it's still open, but not for you.

'Thank you for your interest on our company. Unfortunately you were not lucky this time, but we will keep your contact information for the next openings', yeah sure they will, just so you won't start feeling bad about yourself. Probably only way they keep you in mind is to not ever hire you or ask you for another interview again. Ever.

'We are looking someone with more experience', this can be honest, or again making you feel better.

'We don't think you're the right man for the job', not that insulting but honest. I like this one.

'We're sorry, we're only hiring gay people'........ I don't know, they really don't want to you to ask again!
You could always go back next week and say 'hi guys.. I'm tried out some things and thought a lot last week.. I think I'm gay!'

Oh man, I'm qualified to work at one bar but not another? And I'm not qualified to sit at a RECEPTION desk now?

Your sentiments are common sense... but these people absolutely love me - especially in the salon. Don't really know anyone at the bar, but I've been told I'm a fine piece of meat for big queer Bobys, and all bars are markets with meat on display, right?

There actually is some logic to it. If you are actually overqualified for a position, are you going to stay in that position? No, you're not. Potential employers know that, and don't want to hire somebody who is going to leave for a better job in a month. Then they have to advertise the position, set up interviews and so forth. Basically, one over-qualified person can cost a company thousands of dollars.

ACK!

Well that's ok, but these are the kind of jobs that are learned in 2 days. There's nothing to be lost, it's not corporate big time

It's probably to promote a pure sassy gay environment for their patrons, but is that really ok?

Tuberksi, Sure.. but it's still used more to avoid offending someone than being just honest.
I desperately tried to get a job last summer, I even applied for cleaning job, nights only. Now that really sucks. Only requirement was that I'd be able to speak Finnish. I called there, and they said 'We think you are overqualified'.. man, I have never ever done that job before, and I haven't had lots of working experience to begin with! I think what she meant to say was 'I'm sorry, you're native Finnish. This position is only for people who illegally entered this country and knows only 3 words'.
I was pissed.

It's ain't legal. And the people who spoke to you are really stupid. It is illegal to discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Period.

The problem is alway proving it. Rarely are employers dumb enough to come right out and saying they're not hiring you because of discriminatory motives. If you're really ticked, see a lawyer. (And if you have a witness or two, that's even better.)

Period? That depends. May be the case up there in Can-odd-a, but here in the ol' USA, most states do NOT prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

You know

I know that this hits sour legal grounds, and rightly so.... but I honestly think in these specific industries it should be the kind of thing where authority looks the other way

Although I really think even a 10$ an hour crap job at the salon would be so much fun... sit around talking about fashion with guys for a change, and maybe take cora-lee back for a bang on lunch hours

Too bad...

If industries could discriminate in hiring based on the stereotypical demographics of the field, then gays would only be hairdressers, fashion designers, etc. One of the points of progress is moving beyond such notions, for everyone.

Not almost let go, but almost outed. I am not openly gay at work, though I have never pretended to be straight, and one coworker does know. But the company has embarked on the brilliant idea of trying to coerce us into donating blood as a philanthropic idea, and I had to state that I am prohibited from giving blood...

Absolutely positive. Anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation only go state by state. The Republicans have repeatedly blocked attempts to pass a national law, as it is adamantly opposed by the Religious Right.

The states are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachussetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin. Not even New York has such a statute.

Clinton signed an executive order prohibiting such discrimination in Federal workplaces, although last I heard there was strong pressure on Bush to rescind it.

EDIT: Oops, forgot Wisconsin. Yay Cheeseheads!

You mean there are Americans who still do not realize that it is still perfectly legal to disciminate against homosexuals??

Boris:
You are right about Canada, no discrimination due to sexual orientation.

Some private organisations are exempt, one example being the Boy Scouts of Canada, which recently won a lengthy court battle.

Trinity Western University, here in BC, won their case as well. They require all students to sign a pledge promising no extra-marital sexual relations. Trinity Western is a Theological college that also provides an elementary school teaching program.

Zylka: No, by law, your employers cannot discriminate based on sexual orientation. They cannot refuse to hire you just because you are straight.

I haven't heard about this...

I know the local troops in Calgary (of all places) welcome homosexuals as much as heterosexuals, they strongly emphasized that back when the Boy Scouts of America had that court case about the gay boy who was kicked out.

Just because people like you personally doesn't mean they think you are qualified for a job. For example, perhaps you are a great person but a slacker, or maybe you are only friendly to some people, or perhaps you act snotty.

About the jobs that require you being homosexual - perhaps they can't handle you hitting on the women customers.

The 'exemption' does not bar scout troops that do want to hire homosexuals from doing so.

I think most trendy bars run this way. They want guys behind the bar that look like they just stepped out of a catalogue. That's why they want gays probably.
