Unless we break the rules by looking directly into the save file with an hex editor or entering in a private forum without permission (which I don't plan to do because would ruin all the fun) spying is permited.

However, if a "private" forum gets opened by a human error, I would consider reading it a completely legal way of acting.

We can plant false information in public fora, but we have to do this in a subtle way. OTOH, we need to be very careful with other team's info colected in their fora.

How about a double agent? One that goes to another team and says:

"Psst....I've got some information on another Civ in the ISDG for you; I was on there team but they didn't want to listen to me 'dey tink der branez is bigger den minez' but anyways, I'm really pissed at them. Here's the info, blah, blah, blah....."

What happens to that person when the other team exposes them? Would anyone here be willing to do such a thing that would leave them disgraced in the civ community? Or would MarkG make an exception for the sake of Apolyton and allow someone to use a DL?

I would like to say a big and hearty for double agents. That is spying/cheating in essence, especially if you get caught in the other forum. That would also bring a negative reputation to Apolyton and it would even affect someone such as Sir Raplh, whom his new team might suddenly wonder whether he can be trusted or not.

I think we can use our own public forums to "leak" information, but I am sure we're not going to be the only ones to come up with this idea. Also, this leak will be highly suspect if we make it obvious as well, that is why it has to be subtle.

The dangerous thing is that someone who is a member of our group but is not paying close attention might come across this in a public forum and say something like, "THAT ISN'T TRUE!! Last time I checked the save we were about to attack those guys!!!"

Release some extremely dull pointless propaganda and speeches, like in the old Pravda, and make them pore over it like the old Sovietologists had to do. They’ll soon be so bored they won’t care what we do.

Or we could lie, but lie in such a way that it’s perfectly obvious we’re lying, such as telling a tall tale, but hide a smidgen of the truth in it.

Release the information in verse, such as a sonnet, terza rima, haiku, or to honour Aro, whatever they use in Os Lusiades, etc. Or to take Os Lusiades further, we could release a verse from it to try and hint something, or hint nothing at all!

Or better yet, our information could be in an extremely slangy Portuguese, or whatever non-English language the current head consul speaks.

I was only just kidding about the 'double agent' thing; hence the JarJar like accent on the remarks.

We could ask MarkG to do a news story from time to time reporting on how we're doing while dropping some false info here and there. We just have to make sure to include some real info or else it will be sniffed out pretty quickly by the other teams. It would depend on what was happening in game at the time as to what type of mis-information we'd give.

Is this dirty? I don't think so; I wouldn't believe anything I read(about the ISDG) on another teams site, I'll tell you that! But there just may be a few who'll believe ours if we include a little truth in it. When you atrst mixing truth with lies it's gets very confusing; even for the people who KNOW the truth!

I always use misinformation in my multiplayer games, it is one of the more fun tactics which can be used on a human player.
Conversely we should take any info we get from the other teams with a pinch of salt as they are bound to try and use the same tactics.

I was chatting with GhengisFarb (CFC I think) today. I had gotten some possible infomation from him. This information is NOT Confirmed and could very well be dis-Information.

They couldn't have possibly started in the middle of some vast jungle. IIRC, all the starting locations were checked and the UN said that they are all at least decent and noone is going to ask for a restart. While a jungle start isn't a complete disaster, I still wouldn't expect the UN to say that noone would ask for a restart if any of the teams got a great big jungle for a start.
Plus, it suits GF to try to throw people off like that...

Shiber - that is my take as well. The game administrator would have restarted if someone had that bad a start. He said all the starts were OK, but some better than others. I think we would be in the former category. Although it looks like we may have this little end of whatever landmass we are on to ourselves, and that has advantages.
