MOO2 and MOM got a ton of bad reviews Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

If I recall MOO2 and Master of Magic both got scathing reviews -- now they're revered. If you like I can repost their reviews here.

umm Remove this text

ummm, those reviews of MOO2 look pretty good to me. I'm still curious to see what gamespot thinks. Anyway, I am most interested in multiplayer, so I think this will be the game for me either way.

Jonah you may want to see a doctor for a CAT scan... You are probably a bit young to be suffering from dementia but who knows

As the links show both MOOs got mostly very good to excellent reviews, including gold stars, editors choices ect. Remember this was in the days before the internet was popular so most reviews were from paper magazines.

MOM on the other hand did suffer because of the horrible bugs that it shipped with.

Great Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Please post the links to these reviews. I am curious to see what the reviewers thought was wrong with these games.

I thought this editor's disclaimer was funny in the MOO2 re-review after patch 1.31 came out:

quote:
: While this game has been out for some time, our first review was done without the hindsight of several months' play

So we should wait several months for decent reviews?

Got spare money?

What's really funny is this review

Talking about MoO2 in glowing terms, calling himself a fanboy of the series. Amazingly good praise.

And read who did the review...

Oh come on Kalbear we all know that Tom Chick is a clueless 18 year old newbie, who lacks the mental capacity to play anything more complicated than Half Life. Tom hates all games because he can't get a date.

Tom has never even played MOO 1 and MOO 2. That review was actually written after the MOO3 review and just back dated to give him crediability.

Help me out if I missed any other criticisms of Tom...
LOL

"With the exception of Firaxis' Alpha Centauri (which owes more to Civ than these space opera games), no science fiction game has come close to the amount of atmosphere in Master of Orion II. A lot of this has to do with how vividly the different races are drawn. The rich diplomatic interaction is a facet of MOO2 lifted directly from the Civ games (and later perfected in Alpha Centauri). Races have unique graphics for their colonists, their ambassadors, their science advisors, and their ships. But most of the atmosphere comes from the way the different races subvert the game's mechanics. This is a common theme in space opera games, but in other games, it often feels like a matter of mere mathematics: +20% population growth, ships move at +1, and so on. But MOO2 breathes life into Bulrathi bullying, Darlok spying, Elerian insight, and Klackon efficiency."

Ugh. Diplomacy blew in MOO2, and he makes some other questionable observations, to my eye...I now have a VERY good reason to disregard Chick's MOO3 rant...

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Screw what the reviewers say. They've got me to go out and by a ton of games which I didn't like. They've rubbished games I love. These reviewers are often overloaded on games (too much of a good thing) plus some of them review genres they are not into and so can miss the point. They have a deadline to meet and are not in a relaxed-take-your-time mode.

Thanks kalbear,

Now I am even more sure that the opinion of this guy is irrelevant for me. Especially the insulting comment to Master of Magic enraged me. Even with all its bugs (and there are many) and poor diplomacy (almost non-existent) it is my all-time-favourite game. Maybe feature-creep is not so bad.
