AOM or SC4? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Ok, people... I've been looking for a new game to play, while I wait for Rise of Nations and two games are right now in my plans: Age of Mythology and SimCity 4. Unfortunately, I can only afford one of them right now, so I ask: which one should I pick? I've played and enjoyed past Simcity games, and I'm not the biggest RTS fan in the world (but I'm willing to give the genre a second chance if AOM is good enough). Opinions?

Depends on your machine. SimCity needs TONS of resources to run, but is, IMO, a more interesting game (well, I am not the biggest RTS fan, either).

EDIT: It's SimCity, not SinCity.

AoM, definitely. SC4, just like all other Sim games, to me, is a little bit of fun, but nothing more. Three days of fun tops, then the game gets on the shelf.

AoM... still playing it whenever I want a little bit of an online adrenaline pump. An excellent game, and I'm not a fan of Blizzard RTS.

RTS? Sim City 4 is basically what SC3k shouldve been. If youve got an overactive imagination and your the creative type then get SC4, if not, then play another mind-numbing RTS.

Warcraft3 would be best. AOM preferable out of those 2 games, and SC4 roughly in 56th place behind Advanced Sleeping Simulator '03.

Put an end to popups!

LOL, my vote also goes to AoM... I am a diehard Age of Empires fan, and I love all 3 games... Though I must say, even though aom has superior graphics over AoK, there is more variation in AoK (because there are more races with their own special unit and technology and technology tree, plus some civs are quite odd such as the huns that don't require homes, or mayas etc who can't build horsies)

AoM though, is still one great ****ing game, but there is in my opinion less tactics involved (except for some l33t god powers), mostly due to the fact that you can't build 200/210 armies like AoK (in aom good troops take up more space)

SimCity is fun for 2 hours, but it's just boring... I preffered Caesar II, which was a great game, because there you could truly affect your own city.. In simcity all you gotta do is place some power, water, firemen, police etc and then you have to wait and wait and wait till your buildings finally grow a bit... then add a hospital and wait, wait wait etc..

Hm, I have a feeling that I should have paired two similar games... AOM and SC4 are wildly different, so that players who are more active will undoubtely prefer AOM, while the "tycoon" gamer will recommend me SC4.

I agree that the Sim games tend to be ultimately boring after a few days (some would even say after a few hours), but since I always liked to play them in the past (it takes some time for me to get tired of them, maybe it's the tycoon in me ), I thought that maybe SC4 could offer more variety... but if it is just SC3000 in steroids, I could let it pass.

On the other hand, I never liked RTS games... but maybe AOM is sufficiently interesting and different from AOE, but then maybe not... and Warcraft simply doesn't attract me enough.

Maybe I should just wait for Rise of Nations...

EDIT: funny, I typed "SC3000" and the forum automatically converted it into a link to... amazon?

testing:

sc3000

SC3000

/edit: hmm ... only the second one worked.

That's one hell of an odd feature. It doesn't work for AOM, though, does it?

More tests:
PtW or PTW
Civ3 or CIV3
MOO3
RON or RoN
GalCiv
CtP2 or CTP2

/edit#2: None of those worked. Where the fook has the SC3000 linkage-thing come from?

I do like RTS games, when they're done well, but since AoM is just another AoE clone (or so I've heard), I haven't tried it... or even thought about trying it...

While SC4 is great... the best game in many years...

If you have a monster machine, go for SC4... you wont regret it, if you liked other SC games... but unless you don't have such machine, wait to buy the game, until you upgrade...

If you decide to buy SC4, feel free to join our SimCity 4 MP game

If you aren't tired of RTS, AoM is a highly-polished game. Keep in mind, though, you'd need the on-line part of it to have the most fun. So if you don't have a good Internet connection AND the tons of time it takes to get good at the game and play it uninterrupted at home for hours at a time ... leave it be. SimCity4 is something you can play at your liesure, though you'll often find a lack of visceral fun.

On the other hand, SimCity4 needs a few more rounds of patching, and all the neat-o building and other features will be on-line in the coming months. So you might consider waiting on SimCity4 until all that is in place and the price drops considerably.

Wow, Yin... long time no see... Hope you're fine.

Good advice, both you and ADG... I don't have a monster machine, so I think that SC4 may have to wait a bit more. But (and this is a big "but" ) I also don't have so much time in my hands to extract the most fun from AOM...

... which means that I'll probably have to play Civ3 anyway. I know, Yin, I know...

Well, I couldn't resist this wonderfully crafted commercial email sent to me detailing how incredibly cool (and cheap ) AOM is, so I ended up ordering it and will receive my copy in a few days. SC4 is not out of my plans, though... I think I'll get it sometime in the future, hopefully before they release SC5...

I'll let you know if I'm happy or not with AOM.

Single player is ok, though not as good as Warcraft3's SP.

MP is where the action is......some people think its as good MP as Warcraft3, but I haven't played AOM enough MP to decide.

But I'd prefer either game to SC4.

MM, I have finished warcraft on hardest level, and it was soooooo easy... which was a bit disappointing, I had never been defeated in any level , AoM has a titan option which makes it pretty pretty hard even for experienced AoK gamers such as meh

other than that: wc3 SP was fun, story was kinda cool, nice units and well balanced though i found the night elves kinda weak and puny, annoying thing though was that ye always had to wait until the end of a campaign before you could build all your units. the first few mission all ya could build was a footman and a few other basic units.. too bad cos it really ****s up a game..

why didn't they just include a tutorial or so.. not everybody is a noobish RTS gamer

Turtling is a losing strategy long run, though you can temporarily be defensive in order to tech......WC3 is a lot about creeping and levelling, and you need to expand within 20 minutes, so turtling loses.

That's why I hate most rts games, since I prefer games where you have to use strategy to win, instead of just needing to have the fastest reflectes...

There is strategy in good RTS, though tactics and unit control are more important. I like TBS best, but RTS is just more suitable for MP, even though sometimes we get lucky and a good SP TBS game is also a good MP game, like civ2.
