One last question before we vote

To all Potential Generals. Assuming you are General of Spain and on our next turn we see a stack of 10 Neu Dem swordsmen south of Marlowa. What do you do? What are your orders?

I don’t know about you, but for me it would be the best time to test out my late uncle’s theory that if you keep your head under the covers the Arabs can’t see you I have to advise the General-candidates that this is not a good answer. Here is what would happen to you if you even thought of this (Lord Togas on the right):

My Lord,

First of all, I would go to the High Priest to pray our gods

Secondly I would contact GoW, to negociate an immediate declaration of war against ND (assuming that ND would not negociate peace with us).

My idea is that we can't loose Santiago nor Saragossa. If this happen, we loose our country.

My orders :

Occupie all the tiles near the river on the jungle (to optimize the +25% river + jungle defense bonus), and place some spears on the road tiles between the border cities, in order to be ready to join Saragossa or Santiago quickly and to have the time to fortify at the same turn. Currently we have 6 spearmen in the two cities. So we will have 2 spear in Santiago and 1 spear at the NE tile of Santiago. Saragossa 1 spear and 2 spears on the road tiles.

Pamplona : send the 2 spears to Saragossa and change his production to Horseman.

Madrid : send spear to Pamplona and switch production to Archer

Barcelona send spear to Madrid

West warriors : to Santiago

North warriors : try to go to cut the ND iron....

But it's clear that such a situation would be very difficult to manage.

It's the main reason because we need that iron to build our offensive units ASAP.

Mylord, I assume that you are testing us, our courage and our intelligence. If we were gods, we could win in all the situations. I'm not sure that we are gods...

Señor Aidun,

It depends on if you desire a realistic answer or a unrealistic one.

In the first case (realistic), we need at least 30-50 turns to prepare a winner attack.

And in this case, no one can assure us that ND don't had found another cities on the jungle or in the lake valley at the north. For me it's not possible at the moment to figure out how the attack could be done to win.

In the second case (unrealistic), I would have NOW 15 swordman, 10 spearman and 10 Horses to knock out the Neu Demons in a short time. After destroying Marlowa with the Spear-Sword combo stack, I would walk on the jungle and mountains peeks until we were on the tile close to ND capital.
A few turns before that, our Horsemen horde, would run through the jungle and reach the lake valley in order to reach the mountains on the east of Neu Theben. These Horses, would pillage all the roads connecting Neu Theben from the rest of his country, leaving their capital at our mercy.

Mostly swordsmen and some ranged machinery (hopefully) for attacking cities. Also a mixture of horsmen and spearmen in the nearby areas where we can pillage, attack and seize strategic positions. I would count on using about 5 to 10 swordsmen per city, and up to 5 horsemen for raiding. Any lesser size is assumed insignificant and should be subject for reinforcements.

quote:

Assuming you are General of Spain and on our next turn we see a stack of 10 Neu Dem swordsmen south of Marlowa. What do you do? What are your orders?

I would also wish for a divine intervention, but I won't relay on it.
In such a terrible event, I would try to stay optimistic with respect to the morale of our men. Even though visions of our destiny would torment my soul.

The tactical situation:
The ND stack might just stick to moving South to make them unpredicatble. Near the river south of Marlowa, they can choose to be outside Saragossa or Pamplona by the next turn. They might also split, or go between to cut our road.

What we gotta do is to fill up both cities until we see where they are heading. Warriors must move North to santiago,
(only one will make it in time) and spearmen reinforcements must follow the road to Saragossa. I would have switched production in all cities to military already, and try to use the principle of deploying a stack of a maximum size in the vicinity near them. Also, the conscript warrior should try to cut their iron supply.

Assuming I was the Devil,
I think I would split, go in between and intercept the road, flanking Santiago from two sides... So I guess Santiago is the most probable target. We should station most troops there.

If they go for Saragossa, transfer all units from Santiago there.
If they go for Santiago, do the opposite. Well, ND can go back and forth, split, etc. making things confusing. But if they go in between, we cannot transfer anything and will have to pray and hope for a diplomatic solution.

Astrologix, I want hear from you and the other two candidates a plan of how many units of each type you want to use. That means I do not want to hear things like: 'I wish I had 10 swordsmen, 10 horsemen and 5 spears'. We can all think out unrealistic plans that have no worth.
Just tell here how many units of what kind you want in your army when we attack ND. You are free to determine the amount of turns you need for this. I advise you howver not to make this amount of turns too large: the situation is one of a potential war and in such a situation it is better to be well prepared asap.

PlagueRat's short overview is an example, but don't forget to give arguments for your choice of amounts of unit-types. (see next post)

I would like to ask a question regarding Pamplona. If I intended to attack Spain, I would attack Pamplona first : this city has no natural defence, its conquest would cut Spain in two unconnected parts, and it is the most productive city.
My question is : until we have offensive units, what are your plans for the defense of Pamplona?

After soiling myself I would throw as many spearmen as I could get my hands on against them in strategically important positions and have all cities build horsemen that could execute a counteroffensive.

quote:

I would like to have a majority of horsemen.
I know this is a controversial strategy but I've tested it a few times (against the AI) and it does work.
Our warriors should be upgraded to swordsmen and we should have a few spearmen to seize tactically important positions.
Minimum: 10 horses, 5 swords, 5 spear. With this army a successful surprise raid on Neu Theben could be made.

To build this army would take something like 30 turns.
By then we might need more, I am uncertain. It all depends on how strongly ND defends their capital. An investigation before the planned declaration of war could help alot to determine whether we attack or wait a while longer.

quote:

2 spearmen, a warrior in the jungle as scout. With roads we should be able to strengthen the garrison once we've spotted hostiles. Nema Problema

Señor Aidun Cian

After some calculations, here are my plans to take the Neu Dem Capital.

In 30 turns away, we will have
10-12 vet Swordmen (but minimum 8, it depends on how many warriors were upgraded. See the related thread)
2 vet Spearmen
2 reg Spearmen
on the road West of Santiago (hidden for the ND eyes)

6 vet Horsemen just arrived on the tile west to the ND iron mountain.

We will have 2 vet Swordmen on the road Between Madrid and Saragossa. Madrid (prod. every 3 turns) and Pamplona (prod. every 6 turns) queues set on swordmen.

Turn 29 : we investigate Marlowa and Neu Theben
Turn 30 : we declare war to ND
Turn 31 : The horsemen on the Iron Mountains (ND will move their troops to counterattack and figth these Horsemen)
Turn 32 : The Horsemen fight/pillage/move and distract the ND troops
Turn 33 : The Swordmen/Spearmen combo Stack move north to Marlowa. Only at this moment ND sees these troops. It's to late to react...
Turn 35 : they fight against Marlowa and take the city
Turn 36 or 37 : they are on the Neu theben gates (it depends on if there is or not a Marlowa-Neu Theben road )
Turn 37 or 38 : Neu Theben will be ours.

I know that the gods have inspired me for such a succesful attack. I saw it in a vision.

And now, Señor Aidun Cian, please, come with me to the Tabern, we have some squid to eat....

Of course, we should put one or two units to survey this jungle/mountain area. If ND troops approach, we will see them before they could damage our land, and we will have enough time to react.

We will continously survey our Military Advisor. In case we see that we are weak than ND, we could suppose that an attack will come soon. If not, we can continue to prepare our attack projects as I wrote in my previous post.

The Decision of Togas:

The majority of the tribal leaders believe that Astrologix should serve as the General of Spain. Several votes were given to me, but not a large enough amount to tell me that our families are uncertain. I shall cast my votes equally amongst the three candidates and declare that General Astrologix shall now serve the people of Spain as our Military Commander. He shall answer only to me, and shall have the following powers:

1) He may change the posted orders of any military unit, and he shall give their commanders guidelines to follow.

2) He shall request what military units are to be built and where. Such build requests will override the governors if I agree with him.

3) He shall command all captured cities and enemy units until I assign a new governor.

4) He shall make requests for roads, fortresses, and other improvements, and his requests shall be followed upon my approval.

Please join us now to celebrate this grand appointment. May I also strongly recommend to Astrologix that he seek the services of Senor PlagueRat and LzPrst, who have shown great cunning and skill in this contest, and who have loyally served the people of Spain for many years, and hopefully for many many more.

I congratulate General Astronicus for his new job. I'm sure he will guide Spanish armies wisely.

Also, the very high level shown by the other two applicants to the position show that Spain has not only one, but at least three skilled clan leaders and that any one of them could guide our armies. Astronicus is the favourite of the Spanish clan leaders, but if he decides to leave or (may the spirits don't want it) dies in battle, Spain has two good substitutes.

Long live to the new General!

Great Despot Togas, Señores,

It is for me a great honor and a great responsibility to be named General of the armies of Spain.

My first thoughts go to the two other candidates who showed qualities which could have also hoisted them at this post. I am pleased to work from now on with them in order to lead our troops to the victory and the glory if a war would be declared against the ennemies of Spain.

Our country is not in war for the moment. My prime objectives are to set up an army which inspires the respect with our neighbors. For that, I ask our Great Leader Togas to continue carrying out the plans admitted up to now in order to equip us with the iron with which we will constitute a troop of swordmen as well as riders. For that, the collaboration of the governors of Madrid, Saragossa and Santiago is essential. Precise plans of development will be presented to them soon.

Now I invite the heads of clan to meet with in my residence in Barcelona, in order to celebrate this event during three days!

Viva España !

Pelayo,

My congratulations, I believe you shall be a very good General of Spain I hope that you appoint the PlagueRat and LzPrst as your captains. They are very good military commanders too.

I'm interested in seeing your plans. I'm currently of mind to build a Barracks after Saragossa has built a Temple, in order to provide better training to the soldiers that are about to be trained there.

We'll meet at your party at your residence.
