Suggestion for new type of fortress graphics Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

As we all should know by now, when building fortresses side-by-side, (diagonally in your monitor), the enemy units cannot go through to the other side. And when you build them in corner-by-corner (vertically and horizontally in your monitor), the enemy units can go through to the other side.

Now I tried to make a try-out of a fortress that graphically shows these 'passable holes' and 'unpassable walls'. Please, tell me what do you think about this.

Here is a sample of the terrainbuildings.pcx. I've changed only the second fortress (medieval). I know, it's not that great, but just to get the idea.

Here is a sample picture of the new type of fortress I'm talking about.

It looks pretty odd, but who cares..

A little big and clunky for my particular taste, but nice job anyway.

The only negative I can think of is that the fortress will completely cover the roads. better hope you build all your roads before fortresses.

Oh, so it does cover the roads... well - the 'wall' could be replaced with pieces of wall. or make the fortress look like the city walls in the city wiev screen. A huge octagonal wall. On monday I'll show you what I mean.

You can 'see' the presence and absence of roads in a given tile by the roads in the tiles around it, so I don't think it's a problem unless you intend to carpet the land with fortresses. I wouldn't change a thing.

Good job, aaglo!

Looks good. Did you change them by era?

I don't have time at the moment, but I will download it later.

Ok, Here's something I did last weekend.

The original idea I had doesn't seem to work very well, when you put the fortress next to a river. The river goes allways on top of the fortress... Like this. (so, this is a failure ).

So what I did next was to just shrink the fortress a bit, and make something interesting to the middle of it. I think this looks pretty good. For a medieval fortress.

And yet something had annoyed me in the fortresses of the game: the modern times fortress. It just doesn't look cool (no offense, firaxians ). So I made my own version of it. Not necessarily better, but different.

yah, but looking at your last screenshot, it appears rivers run over just about anything... including the regular fortresses.

Plus, If the fortresses have shadows... (do they) I might be able to pull off some optical illusions.

Yep, the river (or rather the waterfall) in the last pic is on top of the fortress, but that's only because the waterfall is right in the middle of the tile (not in the edges of the tiles as the regular rivers flow).

The shadows of the fortresses are in the same file as the forts themself (terrainbuildings.pcx). It's not any magic cyan or magic green, it's just some random brown, or whatever you wish for the colour of the shadow be.

I use brown in all those files.

Very nice.

Now that I've given up playing CIV3/PtW (so I wont patch anymore) I'm gonna start working on different graphics again (in my case a few unit mods) . Its interesting to see what new work (such as your fortresses) is out here.

As I had some free time on my hands, I decided to make the industrial age fortress too, even though I think that the original looks quite right to me. So this is just for the variation, option and fun.

How about replacing the connecting diagonal walls in the fortress i post #2 with something like barb wire or a fence? It will be small and featureless, I know, but it should be possible to see that there is something impassable between the fortresses.

This could also be done with each era's fortress in a similar, appropriate design.

This would also make the rivers look right, since they would seem to overlap the wire/fence, when seen from above, like the view is in the game.

It would also look right when building a single fortress, as it's needed to slow down any enemy trying to seize the fortress.

Not a bad idea, Notech.

Modern > barb wire & 'steel crosses' (look at any movie about WW2)
Industrial > some kind of fence
Medieval > some 'another' kind of fence
Ancient > I have no idea

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I'd like to see a fortress that looked like a WW2-style pillbox. Like on the beaches of Normandy in "Saving Private Ryan".

Nice job though aaglo
