Well,
So far it seems good.
I have only played through some tutorials. It crashes to the desktop at the end of each one (on both machines I have tried it on)
The tutorials really show battle and building, interface techniques, so far, so I really have not gotten the "civ" feel I expect it to have.
So far it seems like a lot of RTS demos I have played recently, like some other recent M$ games. I need to jump into a full game

Hmm
Hope you'll get that Civing feeling!
Its what i'm looking for in RON since i've nowadays little or no time for full-blown Civ campaigns.
Still the Civing feeling will be different for everyone... and i think that RON will be ok for me... still waiting for cd though.. so i can only guess.
I can understand that the tutorials might be a bit like other RTS games. Hopefull the full game will have that "magic touch"
Still even without it feeling like Civ, you do still enjoy it? (Well what little you could play of course.)
I've high hopes for the CTW campaign... looks like fun.

This is promising. So, do you get a feeling that you're really building an empire? Because this is what could set RoN apart from your mainstream RTS with its boring mechanics (collect resources, build army, smash the enemy, rinse and repeat). |
Absolutely, I feel like I am building an empire, when playing the longer games.
I started a standard (non-campaign) game last night, with just the "standard" map size, and have a fistful of cities. You keep researching your civics, and you can build more cities.
I was chinese (random) and had an island with no mountains (i.e. very little mining resources) and had built my first two cities on it, but needed more iron(?) coming in to research some techs. So that focused where to build my next city. I think I made it to 4 cities before I built a military unit (silly, but no one was close)
I like how there are special resources both on land and sea - you then need to create a merchant or fisherman to run off and exploit them, and reap the benefits.
I have found that the CPU players tend to "pick on" my fishermen even in the back of my "empire", if I was not paying attention, my Navy would be somewhere else and an enemy dromond/caravel would be sinking my poor fisherman, so I decided that the special resource would need a garrison
There is still a lot to be said and a lot for me to learn and explore, but I like it
I still am getting used to the more hectic nature of RTS though, pausing a lot.
WRT Performance - it performed well on my laptop (which is near min spec for the beta) until I started to get a more hefty empire. In this game now, with standard map and 4 players (I have about 6 cities) it seems like it is starting to drag.
