Answering any questions Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Well, my beta copy only came yesterday, so I don't have a great feel for the game yet, but I promised a thread to answer any questions that anyone still had (if there were any left after Markos' thread), so here one is. Post away .

Hey good!

I've one, not sure if it is already answered before but i couldn't find it.

How do the upgrades within the era's work?
Say you go from classical to medieval and you get knights.
Now you go to the stables and do some upgrades on the knights.
Then later you advance to the gunpowder era.. what happens with the upgraded knights?
I mean i understand that they will evolve to a new unit, but will they still have the benefit of the upgrade?
Or is it like you can not do the upgrade if you plan to quickly go to the next era and save resources like that?

Maybe this all makes no sense at all.. but its a question that came up while reading the previews.

I'm not sure if I totally understand the question, but I'll do my best to explain what I can.

Taking the example above, you upgrade to the medieval age. Assuming Knights don't require any higher level of military research than you have, you then go to the stable and hit the Knights button. All of the units that preceed knights that you have will be automatically upgraded to knights, and any new units you build will be knights. If you then proceed to the next age and research the upgrade above knights, your knights will change to whatever the next unit in line is and you'll be able to build those too. There are many units in the game, but only a few unit-lines, so it's not too hard to keep a fairly balanced army as the ages progress.

One thing that I'm not sure about (and will try to figure out later) is what happens if you DON'T upgrade to knights and then reach the gunpowder age. I believe you must first research the upgrade to knights and then the upgrade beyond that, but I'm not totally sure -- I'll try to figure it out next time I play.

Does that answer your question? If not, lemme know, and I'll give it another shot .

Actually, I don't think you need to research the "intermediate" upgrades if you want to upgrade across more than 1 age. I played a game earlier today, where I think I upgraded from Knights directly to Tanks (I'm not a big cavalry fan).

Really? I didn't test that today, so you're probably right -- I thought I might've made double upgrades in one battle, but I could well not have, considering that it was at a bit of a frantic pace.

Well you pretty much covered my question.

To stick with the knights example:

I was under the impression that there were also tech like: Stirrup or Selective breeding

Now i understand that when you go from classical to medieval you keep your old units till you "upgrade" them at the stable, right? (I was under the impression that the upgrade to medieval units came "free" with the era advance)

Still i wonder or you might be able to skip upgrades to save resources. That might be a nice strategy at times. (depending on the cost of the upgrades of course)

So there are no little techs like the stirrup or selective breeding? Makes sense since it would be strange if you horsebackriding troops evolve into tanks but you still get a bonus because you researched the stirrup.

In CTW, is it possible to attack one region from 2 or more adjacent regions. If so, do you get one more army, or a benefit from it, or something?
If not, it would be a good addition, and it would add some more strategy to CTW.

In answer to theponyguy1's question:

Yes, when you move an army into a hostile land, any armies that are adjacent to the territory you are attacking are shown on the battle screen when you start (both for the offensive team and for the defensive team). These "reserves" give you reinforcements during the battle phase (I'm not really sure how much because I can't get very far into the campaign; it keeps crashing ). Also, any adjacent allies will give you a slight econ boost at the beginning.

thanks Suffering from ads?

Thanks Scott_free. Good to know that there is some good strategy in CTW. Now for the digits. Say I'm attacking India, and there is an adjacent ally to India. How much more food, oil, wood etc. do I get in the begining of the game? Or do I get a bigger gather rate orstart out w/ higher commerce cap.?

And say my territory is adjacent to a territory I'm attacking. Do I start out with the extra reinforcements, or do I get to use them after a period of time?

Thanks.

OK, I've played the CTW campaign a little bit more, and it seems that when you have an ally adjacent to the territory that you're attacking, they begin the campaign as their own nation. For example, I was Egypt and was attacking the Spanish capital (the region Spain). My allies, the Russians, had a territory adjacent to Spain (France, actually). When I started the battle, I noticed that the Russians had their own units and were computer controlled. They started out under nomad rules (no cities built) but immediately went to work. Using some of the taunts, I was able to tell them to attack during the battle (though they didn't really attack; probably cuz I was playing on easiest ).

I'm not sure if this is always allies start, but it seems that they are their own part of the battle as your allies (which can be sort of controlled).

As for attacking a territory where you have reinforcement armies, I have had different experiences for different battles. Most of the time, it seems that they send a small amount of troops (only about 5-10) about 5-10 minutes into the scenario (I haven't clocked it). Some other times that I've fought, it seems that I start with extra cities, farms, etc. I'm not sure about this, but I think this has to do with the strength of the territory that I am attacking from. Anyway, I believe that extra armies just add a (very) little oomph to your army when they arrive.

Game Pace Support Apolyton

I'm a rather slow-thinking person and the turn-by-turn pace of Civ suits me quite well. Is RON fast like Starcraft or Age of Empires? Or is it slow enough that I can concentrate on building my cities without having to fight a battle every ten seconds? Is everyone in the game out to get you or can you get through the game peacefully? In other words, is the only victory condition "Kill 'em All"? When I played Age of Empires I always fell into a stalemate because by the time I built up my city and a good army the enemy had built up a huge army and neither of us could take the other one. In multi-player I always got slaughtered because I'm so slow.

There are options for other victory conditions. There are game types for diplomacy, team, tech race, wonder race, and the usual 'kill em all now' games too. You can slow the game pace down by using slower modes (current modes are fast, normal, slow, very slow, with very slow being VERY slow), along with using 'cannon time'; which is kinda like an RTS 'bullet time'.

But make no mistake- this is an RTS game.
