The Iraqi warning follows frustration among Saddam Hussein's officials that only about 65 of the shields had so far agreed to take up positions at the oil refineries, power plants and water-purification sites selected by their hosts. It heightened fears among some peace activists that they could be stationed at non-civilian sites. Mr Meynell and fellow protesters who moved into the power station in south Baghdad last weekend were dismayed to find it stood immediately next to an army base and the strategically crucial main road south to Basra. Iraqi officials said there was little point in guarding what they considered to be low-risk targets. Iraq's decision to force the pace was welcomed by some of the 20 Britons remaining in Baghdad. "It's only fair," said Uzma Bashir, 32, a college lecturer who is one of the team leaders. "We've come here as shields to defend sites and now the Iraqis are asking us to make our choice."

I have only two words for them. The first is "Ha". You can guess the second.

I have absolutely NO respect for these people. You want to protest the war, fine. You want to fight the war on the Iraqi side, you're a jerk, but fine. But to try and use people's morality against them and take advantage of their not wanting you to die is just despicable. I half wish they would have stayed and gotten bombed, and I quarter wish we bomb the buses anyway.

I'd say Saddam was putting them next to extremely high risk sites (next to military bases instead of in say hospitals) because he wants to see most of them end up dead. Alive there worth very little but just think of the miles they'd get from the propoganda after the chickendoves are killed by the evil Americans.

I figgured this was going to happen, but I thought Saddam would forcibly make them human shields, not let them leave. I thought they would be tied to tanks, etc...

Remember when Saddam took human shields last time out, his news conference with the scared little British kid, among others kidnapped and later released do to world opinion.

what bothers me is they thought they would go to low risk sites like hospitals.

How can you be a human shield at a hospital? That makes no sense.

To be effective at as a human shield you must go to a high risk site.

So it turns out they just wanted attention, and really had no interest in actually being a human shield.

I just don't understand what good they thought it would do to act as a human shield for, say, a hospital. "Commence the attack on the hospital immediately! No, wait, there's a British citizen acting as a human shield for the hospital! Crap! Wiping out several thousand hospitalized Iraqis is one thing, but killing a British citizen is something else entirely! Scrub the mission!" Am I missing something here?

IIUC, they could fear massive bombings on Iraqi cities, and maybe even carpet bombings. It is possible they have thought their presence would make the US hesitate to massbomb, to go for precision bombings on military installations.
I don't know any of these guys, but it is plausible they reason like that.

The amount of ignorance these people have is appalling. Some how I actually think they believed the Allies won wars by bombing hospitals. Maybe now they have a clearer understanding that it is military facilities that get the cruise missiles and not the hospitals that Saddam had been claiming.

It makes you think how nutty some of the other far left ideas are, doesn't it?
