Slow Internet Connections Full PM-box? Change here!

Can those blessed with broadband internet spare a thought for us less fortnunate.

In regards to the Turn Report Thread: I feel that this thread is too large in size and takes far to long to download for us with tortoise connections. Can something be done about this please.

Well... this will probably be a problem, since the only solution is to include links to images, rather then the images themselves... which in turn makes the thread less useful... Most people here apparently use broadband connections, thus making the thread more difficult to use in order to acommodate those few still struggling over a regular phone line does not seem justified.

However, here are some tips:

1) set your Poly preferences to display only a few posts per page (this will make the page you want to display, which will most often be the last one, shorter and thus faster to load)
2) switch displaying the images off temporarily
3) download the save (it is always made available from http://apolyton.net/upload/files/vondrack/TurnXXX.SAV.zip, where XXX is a three digit turn number starting from 001) and have a look at the pictures ingame.

I would especially recommend downloading the save, as it is quite small and you will be able to look at anything and everything you might be interested in... not just the pictures published in the Turn Reports & Summaries thread.

I would like to hereby ask everybody suffering from the same problem as nz_upy, raise your voices here. If there are more of you, I will consider doing something about it...

I have this problem at home. I don’t look at the Turn Report thread now unless I am at work (a university). I do find the pictures useful since it would probably take too long for me to download the save at home, and it certainly will get too long as the game progresses. (How big is the save?)

Hmm, I personally don't have this problem, long live broadband

Vondracek, why not just put the "last turn" pictures in a topped thread and add a link to this one (not-topped)which contains all turns.

The size of the save depends on how far along in the game you; the longer you play the larger the save becomes. It usually ranges from 65 KB - 400KB.

Well, I could do this, yeah. Anyone else considering this reasonable? One topped thread containing the most recent turn data/report/summary and another non-topped thread with an archive of all the reports...?

The only drawback would be that you'd not be able to tell when there was an update to the topped thread, since I would be editing/updating the same (first) post over and over... You'd have to rely on the non-topped archive thread for change notices, but look into the topped last-turn thread for the actual info.

How does that sound to the connection-impaired?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

You could always add a 'turn updated' post to the topped thread for each new turn.

Make a version with images, and a version with text links.

I'm one of those still chugging along with dialup, but reducing the posts per page (as vondrack mentioned) works fine; I figured this out a while ago when Legoland's Chronicle started getting large.

Tip for fellow dial-upers: You can reduce the number of posts only when viewing the turn log by copying the url for the thread and adding in &perpage=5 (or whatever). Example:

http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...id=77871&page=1

Becomes http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...erpage=5&page=4 (the page number is multiplied by whatever you need to divide your normal posts-per-page number to get 5 or whatever you're using).

(Edit: Poly seems to cut the text links down by smacking a ... in place of a lot of text, but you should be able to see the full links in your browser's status bar.)

This works quite well for me, so I don't need any changes to the turn report system.

OK, I have tried something for the slow connected... Using my "shorter pages" trick later explained in detail by Kloreep, I have created a special "directory" post in the InfoCenter thread that contains links to the Reports & Summaries thread entries, enhanced with the "&perpage=1" tag, resulting in only one report to be displayed, if you click them. Let me know, if this helps.

I would rather prefer avoiding maintaining different versions of the reports & summaries. Even as it is now it takes more than half an hour of my time to prepare and post everything. Having to maintain another version would just add to that... keep in mind, please, that I am doing all this information agenda in my free time.

As we all are.

The best solution is for people to turn off images. Problem solved.
