In my experience, the risk of a skinny (15;3,3;1,1,1) ship is that someone steals your technologies and then builds the fat boy (33;8,8;1,1,1) and lands the year before you do. I suspect that with our resources we can build a fat boy only a couple of turns after the skinny, so that would give us an earlier landing at less risk.

With a large industrial civ like ours, we really should opt for the 33,8,8,1,1,1 SS. It greatly reduced the ability of the AI to get at our Capitol. And if we don't build the faster SS, the AI will!
If you read that thread in the GL, notice that everytime I replayed the ending and launched my SS sooner, the AI just cheated more effectively and built a faster one. Eventually though, I improved my launch beyons the AI ability to surpass my ship.
