Odds of getting a settler out of 3 huts? Looking good!

Tired of ads?

Aeson is concerned that Barbs could set us back. I am sure some others will be too. That should be discussed.

One thing about PTW is that the barbs are a lot less aggressive vs units. If you get barbs, usually only 1 will attack the popper. With the barb combat advantage and the advantage of defending in jungle, is it risky to pop now?

As well, there is the tendancy of barbs to mill around rather than go straight for the nearest city. My estimate would be that most barbs from those huts would not approach Poly for some time, if ever.

On the flip side would be if an attacking barb got lucky and poofed our warrior, or if 1 or 2 of them did wander over towards Poly. There is some, small risk. Does the chance of getting a settler outweigh that risk?

I think so. I think the risk of a roaming barb comming all the way to our Capitol is very very low.

Now if one of the jungle tiled huts sets off barbs we might want to wait a bit until we set off the other. Then again if we wait to long another Civ can come along and pop it for us and we'd have the danger of roaming barbs anyways without the possible benefits of the hut!

I would be in favor if popping one as soon as possible. Barbs are a possiblity, but the potential benefits shouldn't be delayed for too long. Even if it's just maps, at least that will give us a better sense of the area and save some exploration time.

Got spare money?

Let's pop those huts! Our position stinks, if we don't get lucky we're dead anyway.

I would like to see us reserve those huts at least until we have 1 Merc or 2 Warriors available to defend Apolyton. The N hut (relative to the Mountain) we don't want to pop with Warrior 2, as we've delayed getting through to the S longer than we should have anyways.

I dislike PtW barbs if you can't tell. In 1.29f I wouldn't have any reservations against popping the S hut, as we're likely to just get an Elite Warrior out of it if barbs show up. As you say, in PtW they are much less predictable, and even though the probability isn't that high, the possibility of a 'game over' type result is there.

Two schools of thought:

If we really feel we need a settler, we can go about maximising our chances for one by not having any settlers and being smaller than most of the other civs in the game. However, if we're going to go that route, we should do it soon, as the sooner we get said settler, the more long term benefit we get from him.

If we are risk averse, we should give up on the settler notion, save the huts, and pop them later on when we will get more valuable tech out of them.

We don't need to get lucky. If we play safely and take advantage of the opportunities that arise we can win. Our position isn't that bad.

From an exploration standpoint, we lose another half turn moving SE to get the hut (remember we already move W). Maps uncover terrain, but it doesn't put us any closer to uncovering the terrain outside the map. So we just waste a turn or two moving in a direction we can already see, with a bit of peripheral vision added. Our 'limit' to our exploration is reduced.

There is a second luxury, that means there is a second civ around. We can't count on any huts being there later.

Can we rejink the build cue to get a fourth warrior?

Nye, I agree with this. If we don't pop those huts now, we never will. Webring has a scout, IIRC. They are Arabs, right? If they are close, soon we'll see the fast little bastard sniffing around...

I hate scouts, when I'm not playing expansionist civs...

We will be kicking ourselves if a scout comes and scoops one of them, as Aro suggested. I agree with Trip and Aro - pop them asap.
