Legoland Defense Analysis Support Apolyton

With first contact coming up eventually with the rest of the world, and with the fact that we may soon have visitors near our shores, I thought it would be a good time to check out the state of our military:

Current Standing Forces

4 Warriors
6 Num. Merc.
1 Archer
1 Galley

City Defense Analysis

Legopolis

Our capital is currently defended by 1 Elite Num. Merc. The town has no city walls, nor does it receive a size bonus. Rivers defend the S, SE, and W approaches. Jackson and Panama can both be reached from Legopolis in 2 turns (once the final road is completed by Robbie). Red Brick is 3 turns until the road network is improved. Our Merc. has approx. a 60% chance of winning a round of combat.

Currently, an elite Merc. is ample defense for this city. Located at the center of the landmass, no sneak attacks are possible without many turns warning.

Jackson

Our wonder building city is also one of the first targets any landing force would come across, currently. Jackson is defended by one Regular Num. Merc. Again, no walls nor size bonuses are added to the defensive value. Jackson can be reinforced from Legopolis in 2 turns.

In my opinion, Jackson is currently under-defended. Even a single galley with 2 swordsmen would have a fair shot at taking out the lone defender, with us unable to send in any help for two turns (as we currently have no mobile units.)

Panama

A difficult city to reach from either the East or the West by sea, Panama has an easily blocked inlet at the Hammer Point. Panama is currently defended by a single regular warrior. Again, no size or terrain bonuses to be found. Vs. a swordsman, our warrior has a 25% chance of winning any given round. Panama can be reinforced from Legopolis in 2 turns.

Though weakly defended at the moment, Panama is also very difficult to reach without going through the rest of our lands first. A naval blockade at the Hammer chokepoint would secure Panama's sea access very nicely.

The other point about Panama is our closest Iron source is loacted in the nearby hills. The iron can be accessed via naval landing, so it is worth considering fortifying a warrior there to prevent any suprise landings.

Red Bricks

Current defenses consists of a single regular Merc. Though the city has no size or terrain bonuses, RB has the advantage of currently being the hardest city to approach in our lands. With jungle, forest, and river on three sides, it is an easily defendable locale. I would say the defense situation is quite adequete, perhaps even more than necessary. We may wish to consider moving the Merc. to one of the more coastal cities and replacing it with a warrior. If an enemy has managed to make it to Red Bricks, it's probably too late for us anyway...

Farmerville

Our desert oasis, Farmerville is currently defended by a single veteran archer. Also fairly deep inland, the only real route that would be direct to the city would be from the coast to the SW. However, such a landing seems highly unlikely, and would easily be spotted from Forkmouth ahead of time. Farmerville also has a roving regular warrior in the immediate vicinity.

The current defense situation is teneable, and the archer is available to reinforce Forkmouth in a single move.

Forkmouth

Our newest city, Forkmouth already has a regular Num. Merc. to defend its hilltop location. With a 50% bonus to combat thanks to the hill, Forkmouth is a defensive strongpoint. Probably the first city that would be spotted by anyone approaching from the west, it would be a daunting sight.

Additionally, Forkmouth can easily be reinforced from Farmerville if the need should arise, with the road allowing 1 turn movement between the sites.

Karina

Though not yet constructed, Karina will have a regular Merc. as of its founding. Karina has the added bonus of a protective line of mountains to the SE, making it quite possible to have defenders intercept any invaders before they actually arrive at the city.

Conclusion

At the moment, the defenses of Legoland are quite adequete, as I see it. With the exception of Jackson, I feel that every city is amply defended for its position. I would strongly recommend another Merc. in Jackson for safety's sake, as we wouldn't want to lose our second-oldest city to a lucky swordsman landing.

Our biggest vulnerability is our southern lands, as it would take us quite a while to get any units down there in the event of a landing. As is currently planned, the construction of a road network to points south is quite vital. I would also like to see horses added into our resource pool to allow the construction of more mobile units should the need arise. A rapid counter-offensive force would be a great help based out of Legopolis and, eventually, Karina.

This all, of course, is conjecture on the thoughts that a) someone actually comes to our island, and b)they would actually attack us. Though that may sound out of the question, recent events in the game show us that it is far better to be safe than sorry.

Got spare money?

Very good analysis. I think we should proceed with your suggestions. Jackson is to important to our plan to leave it vunerable.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Very good analysis, Zargon... I agree that we should bolster Jackson's defenses by another Merc (we would have to send one more MP unit there anyway). I would send the one being currently constructed in Legopolis there, sending the next settler down to the South unescorted. I believe that the settler will be - all the time - close enough to guarded quarters to receive a timely escort in the unlikely case that barbarians show up along the way. Red Bricks' Merc, Farmerville Archers, Conan, MercG... they are all along the way... plus, MercG will be able to garrison the eventually founded city. The next city (the city after the city coming after Forkmouth and Karina) shall already be able to get a garrison unit built in Forkmouth.

If Forkmouth builds an Archer (which currently sounds likely), I would send the Archer to Red Bricks and use Merced (from Red Bricks) to garrison that new city instead.
