I remember watching the planes hit the WTC from the balcony at work.

The news sites were all down. The cellphone nets were down. Phones were spotty.

Apolyton Off topic was, right after the attack, one of the viable chat/news environments.

That was a weird day.

MrBaggins.

It's a shame that they weren't saved for their historical value. I imagine it would be interesting to people even fifty years from now to read what people were saying when this was unfolding.

In all honesty, I imagine someone could make a pretty interesting book someday that featured excerpts from some of the threads on all the various historical events that have been covered at Apolyton. I think it would offer a truly unique first-person perspective to history, to see what conservatives, and socialists, and libertarians, and moderates thought about what was going on, as it unfolded. And God knows Apolyton has a pretty interesting cast of characters.

No one saved them? That really is a historical tragedy.

First person accounts of events, especially from educated but otherwise normal people like the folks here are some of the most important sources for historians. They provide a perspective that can't be given by official documents, one from the common perpective.

Along these lines, I was watching a history channel show about the Smithsonian a few months ago in which they were talking about their vast collection of American recordings. In their recordings they had original recordings of the response from average people on the street about the attack on Perl Harbor. People were commisioned to go out in various cities and towns to get the reactions of the people they talked to. After 9-11, they commisioned a smiliar project in which the sites and sounds including impressions from people all over the country on the events of that morning. Both examples were powerful to listen to. Currently the Smithsonian is transferring all it's recordings from as far back as the early 1900's onto computer disks. They are having to work with the early means of sound recording and they fear that some of our history will be lost before those sounds can be captured.

The thread did grow at an amazing speed, and soon, Markos had to limit all discussion to one official thread. That day, page 1 was just with terror threads.

I remember a thread like "A plane crashes into the WTC", with the first two replies there like "What's WTC?" and "Wimbledone tennis court, maybe?". Soon everyone came to know of the news, and thousands of posts came.

Boris, I still have that shot...

It's a shame the first thread about 9-11 is lost. I was at work when someone said a plane hit the WTC. CNN and the NYT were flooded, I got the latest and almost live news and photo's from here. One of the big ACS moments... Gone

Okay, I'm still looking- but here's what I have saved around that date:

see attachment.

Also on my agenda if you want me to email you them:

Once a Civilian is Killed (historic about hte afghan war)
Religion is Bad (interesting thread made in the aftermath in october 2K1)

the 9-11 thread is numbererd earlier than 27498, because The Andy Man's thread on the 25th of Sept 2001 "afghan war waste" was made on that date... I'll look at older archives now- and hope...

Here's a november 2001 classic from Stefu to start us out

quote:

http://www.inksyndicate.com/sid.htm

Sid Meier on Defeating the Taliban

As jets rain down bombs on Kabul for a fourth week, President George W. Bush of the Americans faces a two-fold challenge. In Washington, domestic leaders like Senator Joe Biden are pushing him to resolve the war swiftly, so the U.S. doesn't come across as a global bully, and can get on with the work of establishing a new regime. And citizens in places like Berkeley are grumbling over a bloodbath with no end in sight, possibly lasting until 2010. On the other hand, military advisors are insisting a long campaign is necessary, and they're demanding that Bush build elephants to trample our enemies. What can a beleaguered President do to win this war -- and keep his job?

First of all, remember that national epics resound with stories of conquerors who didn't take appropriate steps to maintain stability at home: just ask Xerxes or Julius Caesar! What Bush and Cheney must do is maximize America's offensive production while maintaining the people's resolve to fight.

http://www.inksyndicate.com/binladen.jpg

One grim rule of thumb must be foremost on Tom Ridge's mind right now: In a democracy like America, one soldier overseas means an unhappy citizen at home. There are a number of ways to soothe that angry picketer.

Take a look at New York, a city that has become overdependent on entertainers to keep the population happy. Cheery performers like Paul Simon and Billy Joel aren't toiling away their dreary lives in the mines anymore, but neither are they helping to build a new jet.

Let's find a way to put them back to work. As the Americans land troops to fight wave after wave of fanatics in the treacherous mountains of Afghanistan, a new cathedral would be a worthwhile investment. Cathedrals are twice as effective as temples in making life worth living. Bush's "faith-based initiative" was a step in the right direction!

Michelangelo's Chapel would have been a fabulous way to keep the public serene, but the Italians thought of it first. No problem. Multilateralists might balk at the idea of sending Army Rangers to conquer Rome, but with the United Nations under America's thumb it would be a snap to smooth any feathers ruffled by the incident. After seizing the Chapel, simply give President Carlo Ciampi the secret of Genetic Engineering and he will forget the whole thing ever happened.

If push comes to shove, there's nothing saying President Bush can't revert the U.S. to a monarchy for a few years.

King George W. Bush could begin and end conflicts on his own terms, without having to deal with pesky Capitol Hill or anti-war demonstrators. Funding for science, particularly research on global warming, would suffer, but Bush was never keen on it to begin with. If Washington held a "We Love the King Day," a spirit of well-being would settle over the entire country -- Bush could take a deep breath and orchestrate foreign policy without worrying about re-election in 2004, all the while enjoying lavish banquets, mutton steaks, and throwing rocks at chained bears.

If he is short on funding, Bush might also consider selling off a university or two.

A veteran diplomat like Colin Powell will be endlessly useful in the long fight against the Taliban Fundamentalism, and not just for coalition-building. If he's in the neighborhood of Berlin it's worth the risk of capture to steal a technology or two from our allies (the secrets of Mass Transit or the Supermarket would be good feathers in our cap, for instance).

That's not all. Also in the Secretary of State's bag of tricks is the ability to bribe the enemy. If there's a rifle-slinging mountain defender in your way, have Powell bring a stack of $20 bills, and presto -- it's a rugged mujahideen warrior, and he's on our side!

And if a military escort were to lead Colin Powell, personally, along the precarious road to Kabul, he might be able to sabotage the city walls, or even the granary. (This worked well in 1991 against Baghdad, to the chagrin of humanitarians.) And only the author of My American Journey could peer inside and find out whether Omar Mullah really is developing chemical weapons.

But be circumspect in how you put the Secretary of State to use. Don't send him to investigate any mysterious huts you may come across, because he could easily be wiped out by renegade horsemen, which is exactly what happened to Madeline Albright when she wandered away from a G-7 conference.

I'll keep looking, but I can't find any archives older than Sept 2001 I know I have the CDs but they are currently MIA)

Uh that was tough to watch. I have seen videos and what not from this over and over and over again to the point where I don't care to watch it again, or just go 'damn, **** happens' and keep channel surfing. Good reminder about the pain and suffering of innocent people that day. Same feeling I got when I was visiting ground zero last year.. all those pictures and messages.. gives me a headache. I don't mean it in a bad way, I just got headaches when I get bad feelings.

I knew when the presentation began that it's going to be a tough one, since it had all those faces.. I forced myself to watch it anyway, it's important. At least you know you're human if you can feel it. If you don't give a ****, it means you're too cold hearted to deserve living in this planet. It was especially hard to again see those people jumping out of the windows. One of those images has stuck to my head, that one guy jumping head first.. I saw it in the papers few days after and it still haunts me. How can people make jokes about it? How can people think it's cool to see big explosions and are eager and wishing more, so their miserables lives would have some action?

Sometimes people are just too far and make distance to these things so they wouldn't feel it. The victims deserve to be feeled and not ignored. I don't know what I'm talking about anymore, I just hope we get to take out these god damn terrorists. I don't care if you hate Bush, I don't like him too much either, but you have to be on the winning team against these ****ing bastards.
