According to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic, the plans right now are to improve hero persistence, do a major overhaul of the graphics, and streamline the tactical combat to be an even better approximation of the strategic combat of past titles.

It's not really a falling out. SSG is going to develop hardc0re wargames and i^2 is going to do develop the Warlords series. They've agreed to cooperate as much as possible on their projects.
