If ads like this make people act in a certian way, if we start runnig more ads for going to church and living a "moral" life would we have a sudden rush on all the local churchs? I don't think so.

Actually this ad did lead to a very explicit conversation with a girl I know. It wouldn't have happened otherwise.

I agree with Calc in that this could run. I go further though and say that this is no different than an ad for Tomb Raider or DOA: Extreme Beach Volleyball - or even an underwear or jeans ad.

The advertiser knows that not only is this "on the edge" but plans for it. They want guys to be interested in the ad and by making it controversial they can get extra "free" media exposure. You yourself Ted and Drose have (maybe unwittingly) brought more attention to this topic and therefore invited more people to examine said ad.

What world are YOU living in?

How many people started saying, "WHAAAAZZZZZZZUP" after the beer ad was run?

How many kids have wanted to "be like Mike?"

How many white kids in the suburbs started acting like g's after watching thugs on the videos?

How many kids went to school the next day after watching power rangers and started doing roundhouse kicks?

How many people have fantasized taking a last second shot after watching basketball on tv?

How many kids have hurt themselves after emulating the stunts on Jackass?

How many women EXPECT a diamond ring for marriage after DeBeer's started an ad campaign that featured diamond rings? (answer: the entire western world since the 1920's)

How many times have people gone to eat somewhere after seeing an ad on tv for a restaurant? (answer: BILLIONS served)

How many guys wanted to get buffed out like Stallone and Ahhhnold after watching them in the movies?

How many kids wanted to grow up and be fighter pilots after watching Top Gun?

It's nice to THINK we are above the messages in ads, but in truth, our entire society is interwined with advertising. NOBODY is above it.

Companies wouldn't spend BILLIONS of dollars on advertising if it didn't alter the way people behave. That's just common sense. Sorry.

I agree. Christina Aguilara's little whore video did the same thing.

Still doesn't make it right though.

This is the "snowflake" argument: no one snowflake matters in a blizzard. If so, you would have no objection to running a hundred, or thousand, or million more ads like this?

Interesting that we have yet to hear from any women or parents of teenagers. (MtG, Ming, RAH, this means you ) I suspect women and parents of teenagers might have a much different view, perhaps enough that this advertising tactic would backfire.

Well, Calc, it's been fun, but I really AM developing a headache (not from this thread, I get them semi-frequently) so I just can't maintain the argumentative stance any longer tonight. I could continue this discussion, but my brain can't take the weight of heady subjects under such conditions.

If you read my previous post, at least one girl I know wasn't offended by this ad. She is on the innocent side too. Heck, mine is the only one she has seen of a guy she has talked to. She is in college too.

Well no sh1t Sherlock but it's all about the degree of actions and the consequences associated with those actions.

Suffering from ads?

He's also never seen the ad.

He repeatedly mentions porn stars pushing products when this ad makes no mention of porn stars - they only reason we know anything about the woman is through the articles online talking about it.

(Why can't I leave this thread gracefully while I'm in pain...?)

Mac, on that point (porn stars) I could care less who's in the ad...well, that's is to say "which adults" are in the ad...it's what they're doing or how much of their body they're showing. I didn't see that particular airing of the O'Reily Factor, so I havn't a clue what was said by whom...but I can guess.

Calc, just be sure they're a clean pair, sans "unidentified globs of white stuff."
