It would be okay if you could like bounce into Hollywood and bounce out again with a few million. I mean some of those hotshot young directors and writers who'd been sidelined didn't seem too distressed that their one and only commercial production flopped.

Hollywood is a bizarre place. Writers can earn a huge - and I mean HUGE - income writing scripts that are never produced for various reasons. Ultimately, subject to their sensibilities, they get very frustrated. If they don't, they lack sensibility.

People like Baz Luhrman have it worked out nicely. Live here, take their money, make the films mainly here. To achieve that position, you need a track record, which he has created.
