Well, besides the war, the Oscars are also coming up (hey, perhaps we can call it the "Oscar's War"? (nah).

So, which picture do you think will win the award: this is different from which you think should win the award, or whether you think it should have even been nominated. Those are things to write in your posts.

So, the five contenders are:

The Hours: a Drama based on a novel about Several women contemplating thier lives and perhaps ending them (as far as I know, if this is inaccurtae, someone who saw it correct it: this is the only of the five I have not seen)

The Pianist: the story of a Jewish pianist's survival of the Holocaust living in Warsaw.

Chicago: A musical, based on a Bob Fosse 1970's production, about the corrutness of the media frenzy.

Gangs of New York: an epic about the battle between nativists and Irsh immigrants in NYC, along with the Draft riots of 1863.

LoTR: the Two Towers: Fantasy Epic based on Tolkien's world, the middle part of a three film cycle.

I'm not going to vote because I've only seen LoTR: TTT, but I really want to see 'Gangs of New York' and 'The Pianist'. I'm even vaguely interested in 'Chicago'.

The Pianist should win, although I have doubts that it will. It is a wonderful movie.

LotR would be next on my list, but I haven't seen The Hours, so don't know.

Anything Holocaust related seems like a sure fire winner every year at the Oscars. I wonder why that is?

LotR has no chance at winning an award for two reasons - there is still a third one in the works (we can always give it to them then) and it has a fantasy setting which usually doesn't help.

Actually, she was 13, and it was quite a serious charge that was reduced to statutory rape.

I would be more sympathetic if it was 17.

Supposedly he didn't know she was 13.

But that is inexcusable if you ask me.

A lot of people have rationalised it away, because, like you said, the girl supposedly "looked" legal. I, myself, have trouble believing that... But the situation is considering to be pretty murky by most, which may explain why he is so forgiven.

Now, Victor Salva, there's a guy whose movies should be boycotted...

But I digress.

As for the initial question:

I've only seen GANGS and LOTR... I thought GANGS was fantastic, so that'd probably be my vote. TWO TOWERS was good, but not great... FOTR was better, I agree with Imran on that.

What scares me, Mac, is that some powerhouse drama sure-thing will come along next year, thus making everyone forget about that promise and completely screwing over the trilogy in the process.

If I came home to find my pregnant wife slaughtered, her belly ripped open and blood all over the place, committing statutory rape might not seem quite so important...

I've seen two of the movies, TTT and Chicago. having said that, Chicago should win. ACTUALLY Atanjuarat SHOULD win, but it won't, because the academy is *****-footers!

I can't wait to see The Pianist and gangs of New York. Not really excited to see the Hours though - reports say that it was overrated.

I have never seen (nor heard) any of the movies... ok... I've heard about those rings... but haven't seen it, and NEVER will, since I've heard the story... it could get the oscar for WORST STORY EVER...

actually two weeks or so ago the girl who Polanski raped was on larry king live, basically he got her drunk and then had said with her, the way she described it left whether it was consensual or not in a completely gray area (this ignores the fact that a 13 y/o can't consent under california's laws)...so i'm not sure if it was a real rape, or just a statutory rape or something in between

however, the prosecutor, polanski's defense attorney, and the lawyer for the girl all agreed to a plea bargin in which polanski would get time served which was like 42 days or something, then on the day he was going to get sentanced, a few minutes before they went to court the judge said he was going to ignore the plea bargin and give him 50 years, the reasoning behind this would be after he served some time they would offer him a deal to deport him so he wouldn't have to serve out all of his sentence, and so he fled

the girl's defense attorney said he basically didn't understand why the judge was going to ignore the plea bargin that all sides had agreed on, and she said that after he fled she didn't have to worry about it anymore so she was happy about that

i dunno, this whole thing is one big shade of gray

I've only seen one of the films, and that shouldn't win, so I'll vote for Chicago given I don't like harrowing dramas or Virginia Woolf and Scorsese is going to win Best Director anyway.

If Two Towers should win here, the rest of the movies must be crap. But from all I've heard, they aren't.

And FoTR lost to a superior movie last year.
