Do you care about the news or should I say "Controled information" Get a bigger avatar today!

I see all kinds of threads talking about the war and what people should do and beleive but the truth is that we know very little of what's going on because what we know is what THEY want us to know.

I mean, I watch the news but really dont take everything I hear as 100% true. How can people argue about these things?

The governmenmts keep us ingnorant and shallow and makes us beleive what they want. What I mean is that we have people from all over the globe arguing about the crisis in Iraq here on apolyton when what they here in the news in their country is really not the same as what someone else heres in his country. How can you believe that what YOU think is true.

Bottom line is: We dont know shlt.

Your giving them more credit than they deserve. Watched Blair give a speech on BBC, then watched CNN's version of sound bites put a whole other twist
on the speech.

Gobblels would have co-ordinated his "news" services.

The only way to be as informed as possible is to get your news from as many places as you can.

Before the Net, I used short wave radio to listen to news takes from all over. Now it's a lot easier, but you still need to read between the lines to know what's really going on.

You make it sound like some sort of government conspiracy with the media, which I could never believe. The media freely reports on information to which they can gain access ( and lots of government manipulation occurrs here in limiting or allowinf selective access). Then this information gets filtered through the particular bias of the reporter or newspaper before the public gets access.

Media bias is nothing new.

A handful of multi-national corporations and conglomerates controls the US media. But they also control a lot of politicians in the government. So Flubber is more correct. It's not the government controlling the media.

Short wave news is less biased, more fact based.
Every country has a station, thence a voice and they
almost all do english boardcasts.

all I know is I'm not one of theses freak who think Saddam Hussein is telling the truth and Bush is lying. Yes I heard this from a liberal just the other day.

Bush could be lying mind you, but that doesn't mean I'll take Hussein's word over Bush's.

Short wave broadcasts may currently be less biased but there is nothing inherent in them that make this necessarily the case. As for being fact-based, there are no facts which cannot be twisted .

If 10 people are shot in Elbonia, it can be " Government drives back rebel assault, kills 10" or it can be " Ten massacred in government attack". Its all in the slant.

and Sava, I also don't believe that corporate America ever gets together as one entity to decide how to spin the news. Instead that come to similar decisions most of the time independently and then will tend to mimic stories that seem to be garnering viership

Of course you shouldn't believe anything that the media tells you but it's the only source of information we have. And I think that if you always keep in mind the intentions of the author you get along pretty fine as long as you live in a democracy.

I realize that no one media source is completely unbiased.

I try to sample around and draw my own conclusions (which may be biased as well- but what are you gonna do).

I think they stick to facts as to not get in flame wars with
other SW stations, and to keep high creditablity (SW is
still the only source of news for parts of the world). Also they know you'll hear both sides of the story, as well as what neutrals are saying.

It just seemed to me that SW news seemed the same whatever the source, where as BBC and CNN on TV can be miles apart of the same story.

Of course they "slant" it, they didn't put SW stations with huge transmitters up for laughs, they're government or Church funded. But I've never hear SW
do a number on a speech like CNN.

But if you compare what you hear on BBC to what you hear on CNN or TV5 it's not the same story...makes you think.
