I was under the impression our 2nd city would have access to the game tile as well. Pivoting the tile between 3 cities is not necessary to ensure our survival. I can see a case being made for the other two points, but we will have to see...

Having 3 cities with access to the Game is helpful though. It opens up a lot of possible production queue's that wouldn't be available otherwise. In my first run through, I shared the Game tile quite a bit with city 3. There are some points where faster growth just doesn't make sense in one city or the other.

Trip, can you explain why you care so much about blocking CDG's exploration of the north?

There's not much to see or do there... It's kinda like Buffalo; their Warrior scout would come back fat and wearing polyester pants... is that what you are worried about?

Re military defense versus expansion:

Production = number of good tiles in use over x number of turns.

I think very few people really understand how powerful (a Pillar) this is, especially very early in the game.

It's a very important diplomatic edge. Not knowing what the other team is capable of, while giving them the impression you could be holding a few aces in your hand is a very powerful tool. If they believe we're capable of pumping out NMs from 5 cities with cattle, rivers and hills with gold as opposed to a bunch of useless hills and desert, how do you think that will affect their mid-range strategy towards us?

Military = the factor with which we can make sure we won't be leaving the game early.

I've been rather supportive of MoI policies so far, but there's a point at which I must put my foot down. Mainly due to my experience, I know "the edge" in a big MP game like this a bit better than most people would.

Somehow I don't think that military expansion is the answer- we aren't really in a very good position to expand militarily... but we have the resources to hole up and keep a good defense on the peninsula- expand in an arrow pattern and make an interweaving web of cities and we can win culturally or free-marketly

Worrying about your military involves more than planning of offensive maneuvers, you realize...

If they have anyone familiar with the scoring system on their team, they will be able to guess at what terrain we are using with at least some accuracy.

I agree that if they don't see the N, it's better for us. Realize if we don't see the S, it's better for them. If we block them off N and continue S ourselves or vice versa... that's where trouble lies.

They won't pass our cultural borders. It'd be willing to bet that the southern part of the continent is much wider than our potential chokepoint. They will (and can) not stop us from exploring if the continent is too wide.

Because if they do so, they risk diplomatically angering us a great deal. And do not say that "if they pass by a 1 tile wide pass that they will be doing something just as bad," because there is a difference. That's the problem. People like Togas and myself know from experience that the distinction between cultural border and lack of is a very big one.

With GhengisFarb on their team, this assumtion becomes even more accurate, because he will tell them about the troubles caused between GoW and RP over this issue.

I voted 4 although in reality I would like a combination of 3 and 4. I think Carthage would do best with a passive defense for the moment and concentrate on expansion and infrastructure.

But if we must fight... there'll be a merZENary with my name on it

Actually, I would not call a Numidian Master merZENary (2.3.1) "passive defence". It is more like "active defence", and can even be used offensively. So option 4 can be a bit more subtle than it seems. Sorry for confusing anyone.

Well, the attack value of 2 is just great in the beginning.
(would be bit of an expensive attack force ,though)

Suffering from ads?

Why not a little active defense in the middle of Persian land?

"We're conducting routine training manuevers here."

"That's our game square you're training on!"

"Yeah? Try and move us, then."

"Eat archer!"
::Nummie steps back onto hill::
"Okay, I did. What's for dessert?"

THAT, my friends, is the true power of Carthage.

I know there are good reasons not to do this, but if the situation changes (other allies foremost amongst them)......

Put an end to popups!

I must say I like your intentions, Fried-Psitalon.
We should enjoy using the merc actively for getting as many kills we can. What bothers me is that huge jungle, and those Malarian Muskitoors. (huge pink mosqitos having gunpowder)

NB: There has been a damn huge jungle on every friggin DG we had here. What's the setup on this game?
Is there a banana-mayhem mode in these games?

Having a start like most of the teams did in the PTW DG might make make it seem fine to take that kind of approach (i.e. risk), but I know from my experience with Lux that when you start out with a sub-par start position, defense is your priority, not building more cities, not blocking opponents expansion, not acquiring resources. An extra city does you no good if you can't defend what you have to begin with.

Agreed. The mitigating factor is the anger between CDG and CFC, but let's not tempt fate. After hostilities begin, we can reexamine our strategy.

Assuming CDG doesn't declare war on us in the near future our top priority should be founding the cities along that southern river.

But if CDG does declare war on us, top priority would have to be the wipe out of CDG.

I got into a MAJOR argument with one of their moderators AoA here in the Spanish forum because of their, how shall I say it, "intolerant" attitude towards anti-US comments and also at their insistence we do not speak spanish in their threads (which btw isn't in their forum rules so technically it's permitted).

So they'll get hardball from me at least once we contact them.

I myself got our moderator on my back in the OT forum.
There is a lot of critisism going on there. The mod suspected me of inciting a flame war when I was critisising US-officials. I think flaming other Apolytoners is a bad thing to do, and I never want to do that! and peace.
