The Chicago Bears have a new starter... Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

...and his name is Slash.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/clay...hn/1523136.html

quote:
After letting Jeff Blake take the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback job, Kordell Stewart accepted a two-year deal to take over as the Bears' starting quarterback.

Stewart, released by the Steelers last month, considered making a visit to the Baltimore Ravens, but instead of letting the Bears reopen their search for a new starting quarterback, Stewart took a shorter term deal than had been discussed.

The two-year deal is believed to worth around the same $2.5 million a year that Blake received Wednesday from the Cardinals. It includes a $1.75 million signing bonus and will pay him $3.25 million this year.

Stewart, 30, was scheduled to make $6.3 million with the Steelers, but they released him because Tommy Maddox had taken over last season as the team's starting quarterback. Stewart replaces Jim Miller as the Bears' starting quarterback.

"When you aren't satisfied with the long-term money, you then accept the shorter term contract,'' Stewart's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said.

What appealed to Stewart about the Bears situation more than the Ravens job is that there is less likelihood that Chicago will use its first-round choice on a quarterback. The Ravens might use the 10th pick on a quarterback.

"Kordell had a visit to Baltimore scheduled for Monday, but there is a real chance that they could draft a quarterback with the 10th pick," Steinberg said. "Second, you have Chris Redman sitting there. Having just come from the Tommy Maddox situation, that didn't work for Kordell."

Steinberg's feeling is that if Stewart does well in the first year with the Bears, the team will want to negotiate a long-term deal next season.

Stewart played eight seasons in Pittsburgh and has been to three AFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. He was a second-round pick of the Steelers in 1995 who hit the playing field first a little more as a receiver than a quarterback.

He first became a regular starter in 1997. The Cardinals offered him a four-year deal at little more than $12 million, but Stewart wouldn't accept. Hoping at some point to get back to the $5 million to $6 million range annually, Stewart took the shorter term deal with the hope of eventually obtaining the longer term contract.

At 30, Stewart is young enough to get those big numbers again.

Thoughts from the twins?

really bad choice for the bears. the idea of re treading a qb is one thing. but to retread a qb who has been given way too many chances already in an organization/team filled w/ talent. and hasn't produced yet.

is just silly. as compared to say rich gannon's late career bloom where he started very few games and was "discovered." everyone knows who kordell is, he's not that good.

Out of ALL the available free agent QB's... they picked the one that was WORST suited for the current offensive schemes. The same schemes they have stuck with no matter who the QB was... sigh...

The only upside is that he is mobile... and he will need it if the offensive line plays like it did last year

come on. The way the Chicago O-line is- they need a mobile QB

They are better than all 3 QB's they played last year.

At least you aren't a Cardinals fan like me. Besides the Bengals, they have to be the worst run organization in the history of football.

IMHO, the Bears need to use their No. 1 pick on a quarterback. If it looks like the top picks take the premium quarterbacks available, they should trade up. Any such trade should include Stewart and either Miller or Chandler.

I never heard of Leftwich. But, if he is any good, let's draft him. I would still prefer quarterback like Chad Pennington.

Actually considering the alternatives,
The SNAKE
The BLAKE
The backup snot from NO.

I'm thrilled we got him. (see twins don't always agree)

Now we can take a quarterback in the second or third round and let him learn for two years, and use the first pick to get a PASS RUSHER>

I'm happy the contract is only for two years, so if it's a bad experiment, it will be a short one.

AND YES< a Bear's quarterback must be mobile.

So what if he's a chucker instead of passer, all the other options sucked. We didn't need another MCNOWN with the first pick, and now we won't for sure.

RAH
One happy Chicago fan.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Everything is relative. The alternatives must me considered. It could have been worse. We could have gotten Jake the Snake.

When's the last time the Bears can say their QB played in a probowl?

And yes, while relative, it shows just how desperate the Bears are.

I'd take Jake over Kordell, rah. Though maybe not in Chicago .

I predict though that in Denver, Jake will have a pretty good career, and after 2 years the Broncoes will choose to activate the second part of his contract.

Apples to oranges. Jake would have been killed in less than five games in CHICAGO. Look what happened to all of our previous, older (more fragile) unmobile QBs. It wasn't pretty. There's only three ways for a Bears QB to stay uninjured in CHITOWN.
1. GET RID OF BALL REAL QUICK. (handing off or dumping off) The first time Jake looked down the field, bam.
2. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.
3. Stay on the bench.

Kordell was a much better fit. And when you add his running touchdowns to his passing touchdowns and divide by interceptions, Kordells ration was considerably better.

Put an end to popups!

This is going to be another terrible year. Jauron will get fired, hopefully, and we can get a decent coaching staff.

Kordell is irrelevant at this point. Shoop is calling his plays. So instead of Jim Miller throwing a 4 yard pass on 3rd and 7, it's Kordell. Kordell might get a yard farther before he falls down, that's about it.
