Now, the time of judgement comes. I'll list the thirteen colleges I applied to, and you guys bet which ones'll accept me and which won't.

Bowdoin College
Harvard College
Brown University

American U
NYU
Columbia
Tufts
UMass Amherst

Ya your SAT is good but might be tough for places like Harvard where everyone will probably have perfect scores unless they have political connections.

I'd say chances are good for everything cept Princeton and Harvard.

Go to Georgetown.

What's a good SAT? And what's the difference between I and II?

I had to take the GRE before I applied to North American grad programs which was a pain considering I learned of it's existence a week before I had to take it and most of the other candidates spend months preparing for it with books and software and stuff. Moreover, I took it soaking wet as it rained on me on the way to the exam.

Sucks eh?

On the other hand I did alright.

Both Brown and Georgetown are really good schools. I used to date a girl from Brown and it can be a bit artsy-fartsy but its pretty cool.

And the GRE is piss easy if your at all competent you really shouldn't have to do anything but a quick review.

I've got a friend doing his PhD at Harvard. He says that the undergrads there are a pain in the ass as they have spent their whole lives being coached and filling up their resumes to get in.

I think the standardised tests are dumb. If you can prepare for them by learning all the tricks to get a perfect score then the test has ceased to serve its purpose.

The GRE is just like this - another guy who took it prepared for months and bought lots of expensive software (oddly enough I thrashed him and he was extremely annoyed). I suppose this is what happens when you don't have national high school exams.

The Harvard guy went to Oxford for his undergrad work and they let him in on his exam grades and just pointed the way to the pub.

I know which one I'd rather go to.

I didn't find it hard; although all the math was from the US curriculum which studies different stuff from we Antipodeans and you guys spell funny too. I did worst on that even though I managed to get over the 2100 mark which is apparently supposed to mean something.

I'm not so much worried about the GRE or the SAT being hard, but that it loses its point if dopes can just train themselves to get a perfect score.

Urban,

Georgetown is smack right in the middle of Washington, DC. Alot of spies are educated there and also it's a solid law school.

It's a lot easier to get into the undergrads at Havard etc. if you have the political connections, e.g. your parents are alumnis, etc. But post-grad work is different, all you need is kick-arse school grades.

And a good sample paper.

You do need to do alright on the GRE to get your application read though (I heard 2100 as the cutoff).

Georgetown sent me a load of stuff after I took the GRE: I got the impression that they were a very religious school because a disturbing number of the profs seemed to be called Father so and so.

It sucks for philosophy though.
