Right. Very odd indeed. Which is why I think that they are lying. Why go for Alphabet and then IW? It doesn't make sense. Alphabet gives them nothing in and of itself; if they were to go to Writing after Alphabet, that would make sense.

It makes more sense to go for IW, then do Alphabet and then Writing for their Civ.

When I wrote that we will have to debate on Writting, it implies that we think that they must be going after it(Writing) next because who in their right mind would go from Alphabet to IW if they were playing the Persians. It shows that we don't really believe them.

I'm sorry, I'm thinking more than I'm writing.

My view is that they are lying about reasearching Alphabet in order to get it 'accross the board' for BW.

Their stated goal is to go from Alphabet then to IW; but that makes no sense whatsoever. There's no reason to do this.

In my wording in the 2nd letter to CDG I imply, vaguely, that we think it would be logical for them to go for Writing after Alphabet and not IW. They will ask themselves the question "Why would they think we would be going for Writing when we said we were going for IW?"

They might answer that by concluding that we think it illogical to go in the order that they stated.

Maybe it's a little to vague and it needs to be spelled out more clearly; that's why I have asked for help in this matter.

I would just like to reiterate that there is nothing contradictory in their affirmation that they're researching Alphabet. It does sound like an odd move at first, but that's just because we're expecting them to beeline for Immortals. We should give them more credit (which would, incidentally, prevent us from calling them liars for no good reason).

If they ask themselves that question then they are thinking illogically. Any civver with a bit of sense would realize that Alphabet-IW is not an ideal path.

We may assume they will go to the Alph-Writing path since it will give them comparative advantage in science and they will assume that we will trade IW to them.

Still, it seems rather illogical, and it seems that if they are indeed lying, well, it's a rather foolish lie, how do they even think we won't see through it?

I have a hunch they have another contact. The possibility seems remote but we have to consider it...

I aslo think that it's to silly a lie and also to early to start giving wrong impressions. But I do think they are playing around with us (this is different from lying) and that's why I have the hunch they might have contact with another civ. Geographically the continent seems to widen to the south and perhaps there is a bulk of land-mass to the south-west.

That means that they need to find it first which of cousre means that they will research full steam towards it. I don't ever remember a team having not done that in MP.

AFAIK you can't get Iron from Jungle. The odds of getting iron from one of those hills (and I doubt there are many others) is rather low unless there's another hill/mountain range close to them.

If they indeed refrain from going after IW, I think the only plausible explanation is they realize there's not much places to get iron from anyway at this time (hence why Alphabet goes before IW, by the time they get IW - if they decide to research it themselves - they'll have more territory explored)

I like you Zen, you sound like a very cool guy.

BTW, I've sent Togas my proposal to send to CDG so that he can make suggestions for addiditions or deletions to it. I'm glad we have Togas on our team; he's always responded to each situation in a Diplomatically appealing way; which is great since he's the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

When he's done with it I'll post it so that others may have a chance to comment and offer changes to it and so forth.

Thanx bigfree!

I am quite fond of most of you "regular posters" on the ISDG. As you can see I am right now leaning towards the diplomatic aspects of the game so I think we'll be working together more in the future, I've also talked about this to Togas who seems like a very rational guy, a trait definitely suited for a minister of FA.

Anyways, count on me for anything related to diplomacy

I actually don't know anyone from any other site other than CDG (I'm a die-hard Apolytoner) so maybe there'd be better ambassadors but I will assist at anything related at diplomacy, from helping write the drafts to being present in chat negotiations. I trust Togas will find use for me.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

So, we have many here believing that CDG is pulling a rather obvious trick by claiming to go for Alphabet before Iron Working. Why would this be?

1. They are hoping we give away information on, presumably, our tech situation. They already know we don't have BW yet, and thus are without our greatest asset. Their ploy has either worked or it is not this.

2. They are involved in a directed tech deal with another civ, which may well give them IW (and/or BW) for Alphabet. Thus it is in their best interests to get Alphabet ASAP, hence their wont to get it off us. They may be researching IW now, or BW (can't remember if Persia starts with this). Either way, they are lying and/or this hypothetical other civ is almost suicidally confident helping them towards Immortals is not a problem for them.

3. They have IW (or not) and are lying to put us on the wrong track. They have no intention of giving us anything and could claim that those who Trip spoke to where acting outside of their authority, or just decide they weren't going to trade anything. This doesn't change things ATM, as we are going for Alphabet anyway. All this goes at odds with the (admittedly little) we know of their President. Such an idea would have severe diplomatic repercussions when discovered (as it inevitably would be), and mean they would either be committing diplomatic seppuku or readying to attack. Surely it's a bit too early to attack, unless they have about 4-5 warriors from huts.

4. They are legit, and for some reason have chosen Alphabet over IW. Why?

4a. They chose Alphabet for trade reasons (hoping that other civs wanted it, much as we do), and IW would not have given them an immediate advantage (eg no hills/mts in their area). They could have decided that every civ would beeline for IW (not without reason), and decided that going for Alphabet would either assuage some fears about Persia, allowing them to increase size before facing hostility, or allow them greater trade opportunities with civs who had nothing but IW.

4b. They don't want Immortals early. This is unlikely, but perhaps they have decided putting off their GA is a great idea.

I am inclined to believe they are not outright lying this early on, jeopardising their rep in the future. Thus I think they could be trying to learn what they can of our plans or have decided Alphabet will serve them better as a trade tech early on.

We're dealing with ameteurs here. I had to explain to them how the PBEM trading system worked. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage depending upon how we use it.

Alrighty then...

5. They are so amateur we can make any deals we want and they will either break them so badly theyare screwed diplomatically forever or we can leach what we want off of them assuming we offer them the right shiny pieces of glass. Maybe we can seel them our WM every turn?

Hell, I don't know how the PBEM trade system works. Personally I think they must have some who actually play the game. If so, they have their own Sir Ralphs, Aesons, Togases and Theseii. They may be amateur, but not all of them will be new to Civ3.

Unofficial meeting with a foreign minister

I was just "wandering through the jungle" yesterday,
and met this guy form another place. He said he was the FAM
of our neighbours CDG. Eh, I think he might be our freind if he told me the truth. (and the latter I won't speculate in)

I greeted him:
quote:

Hi Louis, so you are from the CDG? Sorry, it's a bit off-topic, but
what is your foreign policy towards us Apolytionians in the ISDG?
__________________
My words are backed with the Blackplague.

He said:
quote:

Louis XXIV Settler (FAM-CDG)

I'm hoping for a nice productive trade agreement that will help us both advance quickly into the Medieval Age (although most sites have their UU's then, I want to get there before we have to face units like Fanatikou's Riders or the German Team's Ansar Warriors).

We both have that annoying Jungle, so we probably started with similar situations and can relate to each other.

Since we have a Trade Advisor who decides all the trades and an Ambassador who will be our sites "mouthpiece" and do all the site-to-site discussions, there really isn't much I do.
But I'm hoping we can sit back and relax for a little while without having to worry about dangers around us.

Don't want to get into more detail in case someone who plays for another site besides our two can use this for some kind of advantage (Not sure what, though)

Hope that helps (sort of)

BTW: There are so many friggin CDG-threads on this forum nowadays, so I don't know where to post this.

well, I was in conversation with another CDGer on the team (Manya) this morning. A little cautious but kinda dodged the question of whether they had contact with another or not.

However, I think he did this to make me believe they "might" have contact.

I said he could only trust us wearing the 'A-badge' of Apolytonia next to the avatar.

I was thinking about asking Louis the same as Zen did, but I kinda felt he would have dodged it because of the unsecure thread, so I just told him he could PM me if he wanted to share any info he had, unofficially, discretely, and politically neutral.
Hehe, just in case he had a plot and thought I was a defecting member, I could intercept the plot if he was trying to involve me.

So... we should gather as much info as we can from these encounters and even those in the chat-rooms. Then we should have ONE thead to collect this info in and discuss its relevance.
We could use it for assessment of our opponents.
