I thought I saw in their response that Iron Working was going to be their next tech after Alphabet btw.
Does seem odd that they would go for Alphabet first when they could have a decent chance of trading for it - maybe because they are a scientific civ and they want to get close to Literature more quickly. |
Right. Very odd indeed. Which is why I think that they are lying. Why go for Alphabet and then IW? It doesn't make sense. Alphabet gives them nothing in and of itself; if they were to go to Writing after Alphabet, that would make sense.
It makes more sense to go for IW, then do Alphabet and then Writing for their Civ.
When I wrote that we will have to debate on Writting, it implies that we think that they must be going after it(Writing) next because who in their right mind would go from Alphabet to IW if they were playing the Persians. It shows that we don't really believe them.

Beat me to it, Sharpe.
As seen here, bigfree was the first to confuse their researching of Alphabet for Writing. Everyone, please read diplomatic communiques carefully. Also, while "reading between the lines is encouraged", if we include any of our speculation in official messages, we risk creating a diplomatic conflict, as happened a few times in the PtWDG. |
I'm sorry, I'm thinking more than I'm writing.
My view is that they are lying about reasearching Alphabet in order to get it 'accross the board' for BW.
Their stated goal is to go from Alphabet then to IW; but that makes no sense whatsoever. There's no reason to do this.
In my wording in the 2nd letter to CDG I imply, vaguely, that we think it would be logical for them to go for Writing after Alphabet and not IW. They will ask themselves the question "Why would they think we would be going for Writing when we said we were going for IW?"
They might answer that by concluding that we think it illogical to go in the order that they stated.
Maybe it's a little to vague and it needs to be spelled out more clearly; that's why I have asked for help in this matter.

I would just like to reiterate that there is nothing contradictory in their affirmation that they're researching Alphabet. It does sound like an odd move at first, but that's just because we're expecting them to beeline for Immortals. We should give them more credit (which would, incidentally, prevent us from calling them liars for no good reason).

So, we have many here believing that CDG is pulling a rather obvious trick by claiming to go for Alphabet before Iron Working. Why would this be?
1. They are hoping we give away information on, presumably, our tech situation. They already know we don't have BW yet, and thus are without our greatest asset. Their ploy has either worked or it is not this.
2. They are involved in a directed tech deal with another civ, which may well give them IW (and/or BW) for Alphabet. Thus it is in their best interests to get Alphabet ASAP, hence their wont to get it off us. They may be researching IW now, or BW (can't remember if Persia starts with this). Either way, they are lying and/or this hypothetical other civ is almost suicidally confident helping them towards Immortals is not a problem for them.
3. They have IW (or not) and are lying to put us on the wrong track. They have no intention of giving us anything and could claim that those who Trip spoke to where acting outside of their authority, or just decide they weren't going to trade anything. This doesn't change things ATM, as we are going for Alphabet anyway. All this goes at odds with the (admittedly little) we know of their President. Such an idea would have severe diplomatic repercussions when discovered (as it inevitably would be), and mean they would either be committing diplomatic seppuku or readying to attack. Surely it's a bit too early to attack, unless they have about 4-5 warriors from huts.
4. They are legit, and for some reason have chosen Alphabet over IW. Why?
4a. They chose Alphabet for trade reasons (hoping that other civs wanted it, much as we do), and IW would not have given them an immediate advantage (eg no hills/mts in their area). They could have decided that every civ would beeline for IW (not without reason), and decided that going for Alphabet would either assuage some fears about Persia, allowing them to increase size before facing hostility, or allow them greater trade opportunities with civs who had nothing but IW.
4b. They don't want Immortals early. This is unlikely, but perhaps they have decided putting off their GA is a great idea.
I am inclined to believe they are not outright lying this early on, jeopardising their rep in the future. Thus I think they could be trying to learn what they can of our plans or have decided Alphabet will serve them better as a trade tech early on.

Unofficial meeting with a foreign minister
I was just "wandering through the jungle" yesterday,
and met this guy form another place. He said he was the FAM
of our neighbours CDG. Eh, I think he might be our freind if he told me the truth. (and the latter I won't speculate in)
I greeted him:
quote:
Hi Louis, so you are from the CDG? Sorry, it's a bit off-topic, but
what is your foreign policy towards us Apolytionians in the ISDG?

He said:

Louis XXIV Settler (FAM-CDG)
I'm hoping for a nice productive trade agreement that will help us both advance quickly into the Medieval Age (although most sites have their UU's then, I want to get there before we have to face units like Fanatikou's Riders or the German Team's Ansar Warriors).
We both have that annoying Jungle, so we probably started with similar situations and can relate to each other.
Since we have a Trade Advisor who decides all the trades and an Ambassador who will be our sites "mouthpiece" and do all the site-to-site discussions, there really isn't much I do.
But I'm hoping we can sit back and relax for a little while without having to worry about dangers around us.
Don't want to get into more detail in case someone who plays for another site besides our two can use this for some kind of advantage (Not sure what, though)
Hope that helps (sort of)

BTW: There are so many friggin CDG-threads on this forum nowadays, so I don't know where to post this.

Thanks for the info PlagueRat. This falls in line with what the CDG guys were saying to Trip in the chat yesterday.
