Xp printer sharing Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I run Windows XP, and connect to the network that runs through college. The guy living above me runs ME, and connects to the same network. I want to share my printer with only him - is this possible?

Should be if you set the security permissions correctly.

That's with NTFS, don't remember the permissions available with FAT32.

Oh, what kind of network? Windows based?

Believe it is a MS network, yes. Chanegd last year from Novell/Netware.

However, NTFS and FAT32 don't enter into it, since it's a printer I'm wanting to share...

XP doesn't have squat for sharing security from the printers or network menu.

You have to install device drivers for Me on your comp, and you can either create a specific limited user account for him on your comp, so he can access it remotely, or you can tweak the priviliges on the default NT/2000 user groups and stuff his user account in one of those, from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups.

Beware though, that some printer drivers will not directly support network printing, since they can't get status feedback from the network connection the same way you get it from a bidirectional parallel connection.

Will that work if the network is not specific to our two machines (ie, I don't host the network), but insteadis in a third location? If so, what do I do once I've created a limited account for him on the XP+printer machine?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

If the printer is shared (XP doesn't have any real server capability, just peer-to-peer), and he has the limited account, he should be able to access it. Then you want to set other NT/2000 user groups to not be able to, via the Groups policies. The only one you can't disable from printer access is the administrator group.

If the printer supports sharing, you should have no problems.

NTFS has more robust security options, you can shut people out or allow them to use the printer.

I suspect the change was to make life easier. When you're dealing with 450 students, a large proportion of whom will have computers, and who will all connect their machines 3 times a year in the same one-week period, it helps if the connection process is as automatic as possible. And it does now seem to be almost automatic.

MtG - fair enough, sounds plausible. How do I give him access to his account? Is it asked for automatically when he tries to print something?

Nnngh. Any suggestions as to how to install ME drivers would also be appreciated. I have a drivers CD that states 3.1/95/98/NT4, and XP seems to think that ME and 98 should have the same drivers, but I can't convince it to install them from the printer sharing tab.

Check on the Web to see if they have any ME-specific drivers.

Ah, turns out I was merely looking in the wrong folder of the CD - they hide their drivers well. Now I just have to work out how to get the guy upstairs connected...

Ok, he can see the printer, but it claims it's offline - presumably because he doesn't currently have permissions to use it. Getting there though. Anyone have knowledge of how to do the last bit?

You need to install "Printer and File Sharing," then just share out the printer.

Have done, approximately the first thing I did. If it was that easy, I wouldn't be needing help.
