	Has history finally destroyed the MOUSTACHE??? Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

My simple question is, whether or not the moustache will see the light of day in popular culture again. In this new millenium, the moustache has primarily become a key trademark of four typecast personas:

A - The sociopath dictator
B - Homosexual connoisseurs of hardcore S&M
C - "Officer pole up the ass" (most often in the Canadian police/military force, or recently relocated from the RCMP)
D - 1980's Tom Selleck

One question pertaining to the possible answer: could a man with a moustache ever again be elected as president of the United States?

Good thread, Z. I've actually been pondering this lately.

I don't think I've met anyone under the age of 40 who had a moustache.

Personally I've always thought they were hideous.

In Iraq it's a deep cultural thing, some weird source of pride that they have. Men get made fun of if they don't have a moustache. Like we swear on our mother's dead grave, they make promises and swear on their moustache.

Many Germans grow a moustache too, though it often goes along with a beard. I don't know if the trend is downing with the almost-moustacheless younger generation, or if it's dependent from age.

I'd like to grow a moustache, as a bit of a counter cultural retro thing. People like Tom Selleck, that guy from the MASH movie, and my Dad the crazy helicopter pilot always kept a good cultural image of them in the back of my head.

Too bad I've a few years yet before able to... anyone else ever have one?

I'm eagerly waiting to have enough hair-growing potential to grow a beard or a moustache. In the meantime, I concensiously shave, believeing it'll make my hair grow faster in the future.

Al Gore may be the next president of the United States. I wonder whether he will shave his beard off before the next presidential campaign.

But you're right about the US presidency and facial hair. We haven't seen a moustache since Taft, or a beard since Benjamin Harrison. I can't even remember the last time someone with facial hair ran for president (Nixon's 5 o'clock shadow doesn't count ). Dewey, maybe?

lots of people in the U.S. military has moustaches.

In the navy we aren't allowed beards. They used to allow them, but gas masks do not fit properly with beards.

I can't grow a decent moustache .

I probably would have one if I could.
