City Placement? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Just a couple questions about city placement. I could probably look this up in the threads, but I would like succinct answers. Why are the three 'core' city placed so close to each other? There is so much overlap in each city, especially with each overlapping the ohers core tiles. When I play i never overlap my cities even if they are not in 'key' or 'strategic' postitions. It reminds me of the way that the computer plays. Plus you can som many more citizens out of each city if there is no overlap, which equals more taxes/beakers. Maybe I am missing something.

Miller Town was second - and we clearly wanted it on the lake - for obvious reasons.

Dissidentville was third, and was placed more as a territory claim than anything.

Wittlich City was fourth - and commanded the straight, and had access to usable tiles. The city plan is for two more cities to go in North estonia.

It ain't pretty, and it is crowded, but that has advantages too. The cities can trade back and forth on using key tiles. Corruption is minimal - the magic number seeming to be three tiles from the capitol.

Keep in mind that there are lots of coastal tiles to use. And it will still be ages before we max out on tile useage. And some cities we may opt to leave at size 6.

With different terrain, I would agree with some of your comments - space them out a bit, avoid future overlap. This will not be a luxury we are going to have.

On the other hand, we will have a core of reasonably corrupt free and productive cities, and that are very easy to defend, as we are essentially on an island.

If we can expand a bit on the other continent - we will have a logical site for a forbidden palace. But that is a long way away.

you get more out of your land if you place the cities close together

especially in the early game

We don't have the space. and that is that. Expansion onto the main continent is the way to go.

I understand about no land i can see that from the maps. I have never been in this situation before with so little land available, so my point of view is a little skewed.

I understand your meaning argha - and I do the same in my LAN games:

A. If my partner was located to the south of us - we would have most likely started a new game.

B. If an AI controlled the civ to the south of us...well, I would turn into a war machine with my first prioroty being taking the entire landmass.

But this isn't a normal game - and there are no AI civs to slap around. Restarting is not an option. So caution is the best in this instance and if it takes having to build our cities pactically on top of each other - well, so be it. We just have to hope that we can expand quickly on Bob to make up for our overlapping on our original start position.
