Why should someone complain?

However, it's not a shield really. It is a buckler, a very tactical defensive piece to wield along with a sword or an axe.

Hm, I guess from that POV is is right

I´m myself somewhat a fan of the medieval period, but my post was more about the ugly things, eg. plundered cities and all that...

Yeah, many evil things happened during the dark ages. War has always brought evil... But the chivalrous royal guards and the knights were cool, though.

These guys must be having a lot of fun:

In 1098 Crusader forces took Antioch, massacring its inhabitants.

In 1099, Crusader forces 'liberated' Jerusalem, massacring 70 000 inhabitants (non-combatants, including Jews, Muslims and Eastern Rite Christians).

Not much honour there.

Or in the sack of Baghdad by Mongol forces, the wanton destruction of the ancient Abbasid centre of culture and learning, the river stained with ink from books and blood from humans.

Or how about the swathe of destruction wrought by the Timurids in Central Asia and Iran, again with non-combatants massacred and cities razed?

Of course, I may have a different interpretation of the word 'honour'... but I see little honour in the torture, rape and murder of non-combatants.

Reenactment sites. The five first ones from 'kongshirden'.
I am doing similar stuff myself. And I love it. The combat training is real fun, and just like any other martial arts, it's safety rules involved.

I was talking about a battle between armies.
Of couse a massacre of innocent citizens and violations of human rights is not honorable in any period of time.

Hehe... interresting you say that, because 'human rights' was not a term anyone knew in the middle ages.

Even in our time it's a term created in our western cultures.
It's defined already by those in charge, and me and you cannot redefine it...
