However, it's not a shield really. It is a buckler, a very tactical defensive piece to wield along with a sword or an axe.

Hm, I guess from that POV is is right

I´m myself somewhat a fan of the medieval period, but my post was more about the ugly things, eg. plundered cities and all that...

Yeah, many evil things happened during the dark ages. War has always brought evil... But the chivalrous royal guards and the knights were cool, though.

I was talking about a battle between armies.
Of couse a massacre of innocent citizens and violations of human rights is not honorable in any period of time.

Even in our time it's a term created in our western cultures.
It's defined already by those in charge, and me and you cannot redefine it...
