Who is Jacque Chirac? Put an end to popups!

I know he's the #1 Frenchie, but what's his history? What is the man like?

Anyone know anything about the guy? I know nothing of him besides his recent actions.

I believe he became unpopular with some French weapons testing in the Pacific. Can anyone confirm?

Here's a bit of info on his Iraq relationship

The relationship dates back to late 1974, when then-French Premier Chirac traveled to Baghdad and met the No. 2 man in the Iraqi government, Vice President Saddam Hussein. During that visit, Chirac and Hussein conducted negotiations on a range of issues, the most important of these being Iraq’s purchase of nuclear reactors.

In September 1975, Hussein traveled to Paris, where Chirac personally gave him a tour of a French nuclear plant. During that visit, Chirac said, “Iraq is in the process of beginning a coherent nuclear program and France wants to associate herself with that effort in the field of reactors.” France sold two reactors to Iraq, with the agreement signed during Hussein’s visit. The Iraqis purchased a 70-megawatt reactor, along with six charges of 26 points of uranium enriched to 93 percent -- in other words, enough weapons-grade uranium to produce three to four nuclear devices. Baghdad also purchased a one-megawatt research reactor, and France agreed to train 600 Iraqi nuclear technicians and scientists -- the core of Iraq’s nuclear capability today.

Other dimensions of the relationship were decided on during this visit and implemented in the months afterward. France agreed to sell Iraq $1.5 billion worth of weapons -- including the integrated air defense system that was destroyed by the United States in 1991, about 60 Mirage F1 fighter planes, surface-to-air missiles and advanced electronics. The Iraqis, for their part, agreed to sell France $70 million worth of oil.

During this period, Chirac and Hussein formed what Chirac called a close personal relationship. As the New York Times put it in a 1986 report about Chirac’s attempt to return to the premiership, the French official “has said many times that he is a personal friend of Saddam Hussein of Iraq.” In 1987, the Manchester Guardian Weekly quoted Chirac as saying that he was “truly fascinated by Saddam Hussein since 1974.” Whatever personal chemistry there might have been between the two leaders obviously remained in place a decade later, and clearly was not simply linked to the deals of 1974-75. Politicians and businessmen move on; they don’t linger the way Chirac did.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Chirac is 70 years old. As a young politician, he started in the enlarged team of De Gaulle. His first minitry was agriculture. He became Prime minister between 1974 and 1976.
He founded his right-wing party, RPR, whose purpose was to carry the gaullist legacy in 1978, De Gaulle being the role-model of him and his party. He was the mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995
He failed to the presidency in 1981. He was Prime Minister between 1986 and 1988, in opposition to the left-wing President Mitterrand.
He failed to the presidency in 1988. His party became the most powerful right-wing party.
He won the presidency in 1995, after a difficult battle both against the left-wing and his right-wing competitor.
His party lost the parliamentary elections in 1997, making for 5 years of a right-wing president and a left-wing government.
He won the presidency in 2002 again, and his party (now only party of the right-wing) won the absolute majority in the parliament the same year. Jacques Chirac has a bootlicking absolute majority, and no counterweights to his powers until next elections in 2007.

Jacques Chirac has a heavy judiciary case. His numerous corruptions back when he was mayor of Paris warranted him some worries after his arrival to the presidency. But the Constitutional Court issued a president cannot be sued except for high treason. Hence, he has no judicial worries until he loses his presidential post (2007 at earliest).

I could tell you what a liar he is, but this view will be less historical, because I cannot stand the guy.

I have to admit I've never seen a liar such as Chirac, but maybe because I know him better than other presidents.

This guy promised in 1985 he'd bathe two years later in Paris' Seine river (to show his willingness to fight against pollution). We are still waiting for him to do so. That's the only ancient lie I recall on top of my head, but I think it is great
More recent lies are many, though :
- he promised to lower taxes by 30% in 5 years
- he promised to reduce the deficit to 0% by 2007
- he promised to raise the State's expanses
- he promised all his promises were realisitic with a 3% growth on the 2002-2007 period, an unrealistic figures on which "all economists agree".
- he promised to change the law about his impunity as president
- he officially said "he cannot believe" the amount of corruption that raged in Paris during his mayorship.
- he pretends his actions about Iraq are intended to save peace, children, women and men.

Plenty others, but I am too tired to remember them all.

Well, yes, there is a promise he held. I remember he promised to do new nuclear tests if elected in 1995. True, he did (my very first protest ).

No, he is hardly a murderer, despite all his flaws.

The greenpeace affair is from Mitterrand's government. Mitterrand was busy testing nukes in the French pacifican island designed to do so (Mururoa atoll). It was know Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior was to arrive from New Zealand. Mitterrand (or his defense minister) decided to send two spies to plant a bomb, with a strict order not to let it kill anyone. The operation failed, and there has been one dead. It was a major commotion at the time.

I forgot how Chirac treated the Greenpeace's activists during his tests, but it was much less ruthless.

The gov was trying to cover it up. There should have been no proof nor witnesses it was the government who set up us the bomb. Everybody would have forgotten about it if there wasn't a dead.
