Unorthodox might return, but…. Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I have had a short conversaion with Unorthodox today. I’m trying to get him to return to the ISDG game and work on his paper. He is thinking about it, but would like to do something a bit differently. This had presented him with a problem and the "nasty grams" had mainly desided the issue.

You see, Unortho is an aspiring writer. He had published in various forums and would like to be able to use what he writes here as a website resume of his prose, style and reporting ethics. But that presents a problem, as this is a private forum and things that he might publish here could be of a sensitive nature, if released to the general population. So how do we work on that?

There are several solutions that are available:

1) he could publish archived articles that are no longer of a sensitive nature, say X number of turns after the fact. This could be decided on, depending on what the particular article is about.

2) he could publish 2 forms of the paper, one for internal use and the other for general release

3) he could publish stuff that isn’t pertinent to the game, and have both public and private release

4) he could publish non-sensitive items and have the private items available for someone who presents him with the bonifids of someone who is interested in viewing more of his stuff, if they are looking for him to write for them.

Or a combination of the above things. I don’t have to tell you all about the nature of OpSec and how easy it is to let people know what is happening with a little bit of information. But at the same time, the confidential nature of things loses its sensitivity after a period of time. And of course, there are things that can not ever be released, while the game is ongoing. These are things that we should decide on, not only for the paper, but Darkcloud’s stories. What can be released and when.

As for the "nasty grams", For one thing, we are all adults here (or I hope everyone considers themselves to be). We really have no reason to resort to these kind of attacks, especially over a private paper! We should all be above that kind of behavior. But if Unortho gets any more "nasty grams" (if he returns) about his paper, then I have asked him to forward them to me. Unortho doesn’t want to deal with the headaches of this endeavor without having to deal with childishness. I have assured him that I will deal with whomever does this kind of thing. By Poly Rules, I can not publish a PM to an open forum, but that does not restrict me from naming someone whom has made such an attack against someone and maybe even paraphrasing/summarizing what was stated. That will let everyone know whom has done such a thing and then the public can deal with them. I hope that I never have to do that, but I will.

If these people aren’t above sending "nasty grams" over a paper, then what’s to prevent them from doing the same thing to an elected or appointed official over a volatile/controversial issue. Nothing really. But if these things can’t be stated in a public format, where they can be debated, and they resort to this kind of behavior, then IMHO, they don’t belong here at all. As I stated above, I hope that we all consider ourselves to be Adults and lets act like it.

That sounds good!

What about declassifying story information, and perhaps turn information about 30-50 turns after the fact- and then with creative editing by UnOrthOdOx or whoever releases them so that names are ******ed out just like in FBI/CIA/NSA/KGB documents!

---
Hmm... has he had anything published in the mainstream? IF it's easy to acquire, I might read it !
---

Good luck in bringing him back!

Remember, UnOrthO only wants to have fun and help others have fun. He is an understanding guy, and if you ever have a criticism or reservation, you will find he takes it as well as anyone. But if you insult him or act unreasonably, he will not bother attempting to reason with someone who clearly cannot control themselves.

I like to believe that someone just didn't know this, and now that it is clear that so many want him back, there should be no further problems.

Well, I don't know exactly how the articles work- but hopefully, if he wants to make them- they will be fun and humorous (I've only read a few articles in the C3DG)

I have an idea regarding the 'nasty grams'; if you are not allowed to make them public maybe you can forward a copy to all members in this forum. Maybe that is against the rules too, I don't know, but everyone would be getting the information nearly first hand. Just an idea.

Well, it's against forum policy to post PMs... that's a way to get banned. So that might not be the best idea- BigFree.

Hey DC

I've been looking through the FAQ. I've not been able to finding anything stating that you cannot 'post' what was sent by PM. Kind of funny if this were a very strict rule; because I've been posting my communications with kentonio of CDG that we have been sending each other through the PM system.

I hope I don't get banned for this!

But I did find this passage in the FAQ that talked directly about PM messages.
quote:
Whenever you read a message, you will have the option to reply to the message, or forward that message to another member of the board. You may also have the ability to forward that message to multiple members of your buddy list.

Maybe it is an 'unwritten rule' that says you cannot post what would be considered 'sensitive' material. But it is clearly stated that you can forward copies to others.

Maybe someone else could check the FAQ; I couldn't find any regualtions that would cause a person to get banned if they fowarded PM's.

I think something can be worked out that enables UnOrthO to be involved in the game. A newspaper is a remarkable way to breathe more life into our collective experience with this game. I'm for it.

BigFree: It is indeed an 'unwritten rule' that you can't publish PMs. However, yet another 'unwritten rule' is that you are allowed to do it when the PM relates to diplomatic discussions of a DemoGame.

Actually, I set up a poll to make it acceptable. So it's really a "written" rule, not an unwritten one.

You can post the PM if the parties agree to having it posted. That is what is grenerally agreed to with Demo game diplomatic PM's. Other situations might come up also where the pm, or portions thereof, are posted. Usually the mods don't do anything about it unless someone complains. Then from what I have heard (but never witnessed that I can remember) is that they come down like an anvil dropped from the 20th story onto the heads of those who are guilty....

Before I knew this I was guilty of posting PM's, but all parties after the fact said "no big deal" and let it slide. I was however warned about it for future cases....

There should be no ambiguity towards the rules of posting on this forum. That's where touble starts. If there's a 'rule' about something then it should be clearly stated as such in the FAQ, where the rest of the rules are written. While I understand, personally, that sensitive information in a PM shouldn't be publicly posted without permission from both parties, it should be written as such.

I agree, but unfortunatly, we cannot change the FAQ at will

Maybe there should be a seperate rules place where things like this should be located.

Yes, you can forward it.

-
But there's no ambiguity- all the OT knows that you can't post private messages- it has gotten many people banned in the past when they ahve been told to take their disputes to PM's

And these rules are located on the community section of the forum- if you hang out there or in the OT long enoguh, then you know all the rules
