I have had a short conversaion with Unorthodox today. I’m trying to get him to return to the ISDG game and work on his paper. He is thinking about it, but would like to do something a bit differently. This had presented him with a problem and the "nasty grams" had mainly desided the issue.
You see, Unortho is an aspiring writer. He had published in various forums and would like to be able to use what he writes here as a website resume of his prose, style and reporting ethics. But that presents a problem, as this is a private forum and things that he might publish here could be of a sensitive nature, if released to the general population. So how do we work on that?
There are several solutions that are available:
1) he could publish archived articles that are no longer of a sensitive nature, say X number of turns after the fact. This could be decided on, depending on what the particular article is about.
2) he could publish 2 forms of the paper, one for internal use and the other for general release
3) he could publish stuff that isn’t pertinent to the game, and have both public and private release
4) he could publish non-sensitive items and have the private items available for someone who presents him with the bonifids of someone who is interested in viewing more of his stuff, if they are looking for him to write for them.
Or a combination of the above things. I don’t have to tell you all about the nature of OpSec and how easy it is to let people know what is happening with a little bit of information. But at the same time, the confidential nature of things loses its sensitivity after a period of time. And of course, there are things that can not ever be released, while the game is ongoing. These are things that we should decide on, not only for the paper, but Darkcloud’s stories. What can be released and when.
As for the "nasty grams", For one thing, we are all adults here (or I hope everyone considers themselves to be). We really have no reason to resort to these kind of attacks, especially over a private paper! We should all be above that kind of behavior. But if Unortho gets any more "nasty grams" (if he returns) about his paper, then I have asked him to forward them to me. Unortho doesn’t want to deal with the headaches of this endeavor without having to deal with childishness. I have assured him that I will deal with whomever does this kind of thing. By Poly Rules, I can not publish a PM to an open forum, but that does not restrict me from naming someone whom has made such an attack against someone and maybe even paraphrasing/summarizing what was stated. That will let everyone know whom has done such a thing and then the public can deal with them. I hope that I never have to do that, but I will.
If these people aren’t above sending "nasty grams" over a paper, then what’s to prevent them from doing the same thing to an elected or appointed official over a volatile/controversial issue. Nothing really. But if these things can’t be stated in a public format, where they can be debated, and they resort to this kind of behavior, then IMHO, they don’t belong here at all. As I stated above, I hope that we all consider ourselves to be Adults and lets act like it.
