Battlegroups and exercises Full PM-box? Change here!

Ok, got a question and an idea here.

The questions, what do yous do with your carriers in time of peace? I send them out on trips around the world in hope that i'll have at least one in range of anybody who declares war on me at somtime, i also set them their own battlegroup so they have things like battleships defending them, and subs scouting out around them.

And the idea. Do people think militery exercises would be good?
I think they should increase a units experiance level up one, with maximum levels depending on techs.
It would cost money to.

This would be just like what the British army does when it goes on Exercise in Canada with a sort of militery grade version of laser tag.

I like to position them in strategic defensive places, with some periodic recoissance missions around certain AI favourite routes.

Hazie:

I also put my carriers in battle groups. A typical carrier battle group would consist of 4-6 carriers, 10 destroyers and an equal amount of nuc subs. When ageis is discovered I add about 3-5 cruisers to the group. As far as peacetime I usually just keep em close to home I can get them where they are needed in less than 10 turns at any rate (and I modded the Stealth bombeer to have unlimited range).

Finally, NO to military exercises although a small wonder National Traning Center (like Ft. Irwin for the US or the Negev desert for the Israelis) would be good.

Better would be to have a level after elite instead of before. But training should only be able to be carried out in a very few (Im thinking a single) city.

Mad Bomber: Agree.

badams52: But that training would represent better soldiers, let's say marines, or some other special forces (GROM )

Tired of ads?

If you are really iterested in reality, you can set up a bombing range in your territory, just bomb improvements

I've done it a couple of times when I haven't had anything better to do... (or anyone better to bomb)

Oh please, the US has dozens of bombing ranges as do most other countries in the world! How else are they going to practice??

Of course, nasty thing would be if people actually lived in those bombing ranges...

You can set up a bombing range outside any city's radius so you don't do needless damage. Put some workers nearby to repair the damage and repeat. Sure keeps an itchy trigger finger happy.

(I am truly a sick and twisted human being)

Right I always send my fleet around to see what's going on in the world. A nice trip is good for the morals of the soldiers, come to the navy see the world and get a woman in every port around the world
I like your idea because navy exercises boosts the experience. When you see a lot you learn a lot

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

During peacetimes, I send my carriers out to international waters just outside a potential enemy's waters. I bring 2-3 destroyers for escort with my carrier. I keep those destroyers ahead, aside and near instead of directly on the space with my carrier. My carrier airwing usually consists of 2 fighters and 2 bombers. Sometimes all fighters or all bombers, depending on my situation. I normally like to keep at least 1 fighter onboard for recon missions. So when I expect a war or I am on bad terms with another nation, I try to keep my battlegroups within a one turn striking range. Or I will at least dock them at a nearby port provided I have one close enough. At last, I love those carriers!

Well, i always try to have an impressive airforce. When invading other continents i keep all my air units on carriers, cuz i don't think i can hold the citys they're stationed in.
I've also noticed my offensives are more successful around coastlines because of this! hehe

Battle groups are probably my favorite thing in war.
If properly placed and assembled you can cripple an enemy with one turn.
In my last game I have kept 6 "fleets" containing a battleship, 2 destroyers and a carrier (3 bomber+1fighter) floating around my enemy soft spots, if you add some paratroopers that will drop into the AI luxury and resources points. You’ve already dug the grave for the AI. Now all that is left is to gently push him into that grave with the assistance of your trusty armor

Yes, in one of my past games I used a few destroyers to bombard my enemy's oil resources along the shore. Fortunately for me this AI nation only had 2 oil resources and both were near the coasts. I continued to bomb the roads and keep the AI from getting that oil. I signed a trade embargo to be sure they could not get oil overseas either. All the while I had 3 carrier task forces heading over each with 2 destroyer escorts. So between all 3 carriers I had 12 aircraft. Because this AI could not get oil, they could not build any aircraft. So all 12 of my aircraft were bombers.

When these carrier task forces got over there I bombed the hell out of several improvements, units, cities you name it. I later sent another carrier out there. After about 10 turns, they had cities that were once size 15 or more down to a very low 3 or even less. It was a complete naval and air campaign and I did not bring in any ground forces until the very end. Which was just infantry to take over the weakened cities. It all worked good!
