Well at least it's not reminding me of the Falklands. I wonder if the Falklands will prove to be the last war won by the side that didn't hold clear air superiority.

You're absolutely right. The Federation is a bunch of touchy-feely group hug p***y diplomats which has every two-bit punk empire who comes along try to take a piece out of it. We won't make the same mistake.

True. But the terrain is somewhat different. This time, the US should have a chance.

There are significant differences.

In Vietnam, the U.S. was proping up a series of brutal dictatorships. All too often, the U.S. tropps also restorted to brutal methods. In comparison, Vietnam's libertor from the French, Ho Chi Minh, looked pretty good to the populous. Plus, because the war in the south was a guerilla war, there was no capital or other fixed asset to attack, and enemy forces melted away.

In Iraq, no one can make Saddam look good in comparison. Plus, when word gets around that coalition troops are bringing food & medicine and will lay down covering fire so that civilians can escape from Iraqi irregulars, we're going to look pretty darn good.

Plus, we can pin Iraqi field units down in the deserts and pound them into dust.

No not really horse.

Good troll though.

Zkrib is also right, once Iraqis know the US/UK is there to finish it this time, their condidence will grow and they'll be glad to see the government gone.

The war won't be bloody, but the occupation will be, the Sunnis will be going geurilla on us. The Shiites like us because the Baathists are Sunnis. Saddam's paramllitary thugs will be harrassing us long after this war is finished, thats what the Vietnam scare is about.

Ruby
Kenny Rogers

Ruby, are you contemplating going out some where?
The shadow on the wall tells me, the sun is going down
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town
It wasn't me who started that old crazy Asian war,
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore
And yes, it's true that I am not the man I used to be
Oh, Ruby, I still need some company
It's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed
And the wants and the needs of a woman your age, Ruby, I realize
But it won't be long, I've heard them say, until I'm not around
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town
She's leaving now, 'cause I just heard the slamming of the door
The way I know I've heard it slam a hundred times before
And if I could move, I'd get my gun and put her in the ground
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town
Oh, Ruby, for God's sake turn around

Why oh why are people missing the point. The war will probably be won, but that will only be the start of the trouble.

Look if the US is not number one on every Iraqui's hate list it is probably number 2 or 3 if you count Israel. The Iraqui people might say nice things or play nice initially but they hate America's guts. The number one requirement for a guerilla war is that the guerillas have the local population on side. I think it's pretty clear that in the absence of Saddam the move to push out the "colonialists" will be pretty popular and the conditions for urban guerilla warfare will be quite favourable. The occupation just looks like providing a local and accessible place for people who want veangance on America to come and take it. OBL must be jumping for joy.

And what recent events would back up your view on the Iraqi's will to resist invasion?

BTW, I'm as far from a "com" as anyone could get. I have been a conservative voter in every election so far. But why would that prevent me from opposing a war of agression?

That's exactly it. You can't make a comparison to germany or japan in rebuilding and post-war stability scenarios because they were a lot more homogeneous and a lot more willing to work together in rebuilding their respective country. Iraq will be a quagmire.

Some Administration officials testified before Congress said that Iraq should have an independent, democratically elected government in two- three years post war.

Good luck.....

No, Iraq does not remind me of Vietnam. Vietnam was largely a jungle and the people were more asian looking. Iraq, on the other hand, has quite a bit of sand and I think there are a lot of Muslims there...
