What are the origins of "DL"

Only other forum I post at that has problems with multiple accounts calls them "AE"s - Alter Egos!

Double Log in seems to more accurately describe what the people are doing then to call it an Alternate Ego. Most of the DLs have the same personality just a different name.

It was me! YES! HAHAHA! IT WAS MY INVENTION! High time someone asked about a forum convention I invented, instead of crediting me with the banana option, for example? (GP? Pish tosh!)

Basically, accusing people of being a DL is a tradition from the times immemorial, and one day I just decided to do it in a form of dance. I was, somehow, inspired by that Simpsons episode where Lisa decides to go vegetarian and at one point Homer starts to dance and sing "You don't get friends with sa-lad! You don't get friends with sa-lad!" and the rest of the family joins in. The original, real DL dance goes like this:

Do the DL dance!

You don't get friends with D-L!
You don't get friends with D-L!
You don't get friends with D-L!
You don't get friends with D-L!

The only forum convention I invented was the "poll with all the options exactly the same" convention, which is now IIRC a restrictable offense.

I know the DL dance was around before the dance smiley was added.

I remember accusing someone of having multiple accounts years ago. Shortly after Apolyton was created if memory serves. Everyone thought I was paranoid and asked me why on Earth anyone would want to create multiple accounts.

In my very early months here, dls were accepted, and there was a general feeling of 'boys will be boys'. Then when the two forums merged, it seemed like the Civ 2 off-topic brought a touch of class to the CTP off-topic and dls got rarer as talks of Byzantium with Prophygenitus and talks of the morality of redistribution with Red Trotskyite and co. increased. For a while I remember dls not being a big deal at all (the only dl I ever had was from before the merger) and then there have been times when there would be a spate of them.

Very unpredictable, really.
